PCTPA, Caltrans break ground on Highway 49 sidewalk project

The Placer County Transportation Planning Agency (PCTPA) and Caltrans, in collaboration with the city of Auburn and Placer County, are pleased to announce the groundbreaking of the Highway 49 Sidewalk Gap Closure Project. This project will address critical sidewalk gaps along Highway 49 between I-80 and Dry Creek Road within Auburn and unincorporated North Auburn. Construction is slated to begin in late April, contingent on favorable weather conditions. "This project is one in a series of many, illustrating Caltrans' commitment to safety along State Route 49," said Caltrans District 3 Director Sergio Aceves. "Not only does the project enhance the vitality of the corridor, by adding complete street elements, but also provides a more sustainable and reliable transportation network for all." The project will enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety by creating a contiguous, accessible path along this corridor. The project is funded in part by a state Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant of $14.4 million secured by PCTPA. Key features of the project include the construction of nearly 10,000 feet of new sidewalks, curb ramps, multiple crosswalks across Highway 49, and the addition of a pedestrian bridge over Rock Creek. "The Highway 49 Sidewalk Gap Closure Project represents a significant step toward improving safety and mobility for Auburn residents," said Auburn City Councilmember and PCTPA Board Member Alice Dowdin-Calvillo. "This project will create a much-needed, safe connection for pedestrians and cyclists traveling through the area." Placer County District 5 Supervisor Cindy Gustafson added, "Highway 49 serves as a vital link for the communities of Auburn and North Auburn. Closing these sidewalk gaps will greatly enhance safety and accessibility, ensuring that all users can travel through this corridor with confidence." Caltrans and its contractor, Pacific Infrastructure Construction, LLC of Vacaville will be constructing the project and expect completion by summer 2026. Access to all businesses will be maintained, but motorists should anticipate periodic lane closures as work progresses.
