Rest assured: How to heal while you sleep

Healthy sleep doesn't just start in the sheets. It starts with your nervous system. Most people don't realize how deeply connected their sleep quality is to the state of their Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). This system is responsible for regulating everything from heart rate to digestion. It is the quiet operator behind every restorative night of sleep. We spend a third of our lives sleeping. And if that sleep isn't truly restful? Our health suffers, often in ways we don't immediately notice. The ANS includes the Sympathetic Nervous System (our "fight-or-flight" mode), the Parasympathetic Nervous System (responsible for "rest, digest and heal") and the Enteric Nervous System (the gut brain). For truly restful sleep, we need the parasympathetic system to take the lead at night. That's when the body does its best work as it repairs, rebalances and recovers. But in our modern world, with its constant stimulation and high stress, many of us go to bed with our sympathetic system still firing. Your body is exhausted, but your brain just can't shut off. Racing thoughts, elevated heart rate and restlessness keep you from entering a restorative, deep sleep state, thus creating a cycle leading to groggy mornings and stressed-out days, running off of stress hormones and caffeine. This is not a healthy long-term strategy. Sleep is not just a passive state; it's a powerful tool for healing. It supports brain function, memory, emotional regulation, immune health and metabolism. Chronic lack of quality sleep can raise your risk for serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and depression. As we age, our sleep needs change. According to current reports, 35 percent of adults are not getting enough rest or sleep on a daily basis. It's clear people need more quality sleep. The good news? You can take simple steps to improve your sleep hygiene and support a healthier nervous system. Here are a few to get you started: * Stick to a schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Your body thrives on rhythm. * Move daily: Regular exercise supports your body's natural sleep-wake cycle. Aim for 20-30 minutes each day. * Limit late stimulants: Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol in the hours leading up to bedtime. * Get out of bed if you can't sleep: Lying awake can increase anxiety. If you're tossing and turning, get up and read or listen to calming music until sleepiness returns. * Create a sleep-friendly environment: Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet. Minimize screen exposure and distractions. * Wind down with intention: A warm bath, light reading, soft music or meditation signals your nervous system it's time to rest. * Practice breathwork: Slow, conscious breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system. A few minutes of mindful breathwork before bed can calm your entire system. Getting quality sleep is essential – not just for feeling rested but for surviving and thriving. Just like we need nourishing food and clean water, our bodies and brains crave deep, restorative rest. Your body is always communicating with you.
