WPUSD debates potential new school boundaries

Editors note: This story was updated at 3:35 p.m. on Friday, June 13, 2025. Western Placer Unified School District debated potential new school boundaries during a special meeting June 10. The discussion session was titled "Attendance Boundary Study" and was requested by Superintendent Kerry Callahan. The presentation to the board stated that Village 1, 5 and 7 are projected to build 1,700 new homes over the next six years. It also states Twelve Bridges Middle and high schools are projected to exceed capacity with both middle schools exceeding total capacity. It shared there are not enough Title V classrooms for all TK and kindergarten classes. First Street boundaries The presentation recommended the school board to repurpose First Street Elementary for Glen Edwards Middle School's advantage. First Street's boundary would be reassigned to Foskett Ranch and Creekside Oaks Elementary schools. First Street currently has a 74.7-percent enrollment of 381 students for the 2024-25 school year. The projected enrollment for 2030-31 would be 382 students without the reassignment, and 81 students with the reassignment, giving Glen Edwards an opportunity to use their classrooms. Creekside Oaks would need an additional six classrooms if current First Street students were reassigned to their school. No additional classrooms would be needed for Foskett Ranch. Lincoln Crossing boundaries The presentation also recommended changing Lincoln Crossing Elementary's boundary to no longer feed into Twelve Bridges Middle and high schools. The boundary would reassign those students into Glen Edwards Middle School and Lincoln High School. Twelve Bridges Middle School is currently at 88.5 percent enrollment for the 2024-25 school year with 932 students. The current boundaries suggest that projected growth would overfill the school at 105.4 percent enrollment with 1,110 students by 2030-31. Twelve Bridges High School sits at 88.4 percent enrollment with 1,312 students for the current school year. The school board is projecting the enrollment to grow to 110.9 percent with 1,647 students by 2030-31. If Lincoln Crossing Elementary students change paths to Glen Edwards, the board recommends the middle school would need an additional 13 classrooms to keep up with the jump in enrollment. Both middle schools in the district currently have 39 classrooms. The additional 13 classrooms would come from First Street if the boundaries for those students were changed to other schools. Glen Edwards enrollment would be projected to grow from 811 to 1,274 by the 2030-31 school year with the proposed new boundaries. Twelve Bridges would go from 932 students to 855 by 2030-31 if the boundaries were changed. Without the changed boundaries, the middle school is expected to have 1,110 students in five years. Lincoln High School would get an additional eight portable classrooms if the Lincoln Crossing Elementary boundary gets moved. Lincoln High School currently sits at a 68.3 percent enrollment rate with 1,180 students in 64 classrooms. The Lincoln Crossing Elementary boundary students would increase the high school's enrollment to a projected 88.6 percent with 1,723 students in 72 classrooms. Kinder Kindergarten in WPUSD are currently extended-day programs that begin at 8:15 a.m. and end at 1:40 p.m. Starting in 2026-27, kindergarten will be shift back to an a.m.-p.m. model to accommodate increasing enrollment. Conclusion Tuesday's presentation stated the changes could occur as early as 2026-27 but on June 13, WPUSD released a website stating the new boundaries would start during the 2028-29 school year. The school board plans to host a series of information sessions at Lincoln Crossing Elementary to provide additional information and answer questions. The website states the Sept. 2 meeting will be used to take action to shift the Lincoln Crossing Elementary boundary to follow Glen Edwards Middle School and Lincoln Crossing at the 2028-29 school year. "A decision on this topic will be made at the September 2nd meeting - allowing ample time for proper communication and information sessions with the school community," the website states. "It is important to us that those affected are well-informed, are heard, and know their options."
