Beyond the hype: How AI is helping house the homeless in Folsom

Homelessness is one of Folsom's most pressing challenges. The front line of this crisis isn't just City Hall; it's our local nonprofits like HART (Homeless Assistance Resource Team) of Folsom, which works tirelessly to support our neighbors in need. These organizations, however, are often short on staff and resources, struggling to reach a wider support base. What if they could leverage the same cutting-edge AI technology as a Silicon Valley startup to amplify their message and mission? This question led me, a local high school student, to found ThrAIve AI, a student-led initiative to connect nonprofits with the tools of the future. For more than two years, ThrAIve has worked to bridge this gap, hosting webinars with guest speakers from across the nation and connecting with nonprofits globally. But our first applied-AI partner was right here in our community: HART of Folsom. The first month was brutal. We sent hundreds of emails to various organizations, only to see an empty inbox. But then HART's director called, and we got to work. We proposed an AI social media content generator to help them expand their support. With a small team of five local students, we were ready to build a real tool for a problem that mattered. Over Zoom calls from my kitchen table, we hit our first major roadblock. We realized our initial model, trained on generic data, would not generate appealing content. This was the most valuable feedback we could have received. HART's posts had to be about true stories, genuine voices and messages that truly moved donors. A generic AI wouldn't work, so we rebuilt it. Working for weeks with the HART team, we developed a new system. We trained it on HART's specific success stories and core messages, allowing it to learn their unique voice. The new tool didn't replace their team; it empowered them. It helped them craft more compelling, genuine narratives from their own data, faster. The results were stunning. Fundraising from their AI-assisted campaigns increased 350 percent. But this isn't a story about technology; it's about what technology can do. That massive increase in support translated directly into real-world impact: six new families found permanent housing. This lesson never goes away. Urgency shows you a hole, but listening shows you how to fill it. We often talk about AI as a distant, futuristic concept, or even a threat. But this project proves it can be a powerful tool for compassion, right here in our community. Our work with HART is not over; our team continues to explore new areas to expand. We are now looking at more advanced AI applications, such as predictive models that could help HART identify which individuals are most likely to succeed with dedicated housing and resources, ensuring their support goes where it can have the greatest impact. This is the real promise of AI. We don't have to wait for the future; we can use these tools now to help our local nonprofits bridge the resource gap, amplify their stories and create tangible change for our most vulnerable neighbors.
