1949: TB a problem; diabetes cases on rise

25 years ago March 15, 2001 A memorial service was held for Shigeno Ichikawa, 83, a native of Alameda and longtime resident of Placer County. Retired from McClellan AFB as an instrument mechanic, Shigeno was a member of the Placer Buddhist Church and Placer Sierra Bonsai Club. A member of the Placer Buddhist Church of Penryn, Yoshiko Sunada passed away at the age of 90. A homemaker, she was a member of the JACL and Placer Buddhist Fujinkai. Mrs. Rebecca Kattenhorn's sixth-grade class at Loomis School planted bulbs to help beautify the campus. Committee Chairman Henry Schneider said the Monte Carlo Night was a huge success for its sponsors, the Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce and Paul's Place Association. The theme was "The Fabulous 60s." Sierra College professor Gary Noy spoke to the Patrons Club at the college about those who traveled to the American West during the 19th century. Gary's latest book, "Wind in Buffalo Grass," had 52 passages ranging from the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) to the description of a hunting expedition by Theodore Roosevelt in 1885. Peter Ucovich of Loomis won the decathlon at the Bruce Dummond Invitational at CSU Sacramento. His best events were the 100 meters, 400 meters and long jump. Mark Davis, a second-generation Loomis native, moved his Sierra View Company into a new headquarters in Granite Bay. His company built a number of commercial buildings in the Roseville area. Directing their elementary bands in a combined concert were Susan Carlson (Newcastle), Joy Cunningham (Penryn) and Sid McCammond (Loomis). The Blue and Gold Dinner, honoring scouting's birthday, was held at Placer Elementary School. Pack 12 Scouts at the event included Kirk Middleton, Eric Ash, Alex Sznaider, Kevin Duarte and Colin Naake, along with Scoutmaster Carl Naake and guest speaker Sheriff Ed Bonner. 50 years ago March 11, 1976 A Loomis man was seriously injured when an explosive device detonated on his driveway. Metal fragments peppered his leg in the bizarre explosion. Sheriff's Captain Don Nunes was part of an investigation. Home on leave from the Philippines was Mrs. John Ries, the former Joyce Hecker of Loomis. She was serving with her husband John in the U.S. Air Force. She worked on the narcotics squad along with her specially trained dog. Loomis Judge Cosma Sakamoto cannot seek re-election following a California Supreme Court decision. The ruling will prevent the local judge from staying in office because he was not an attorney. The Loomis Motel on Taylor Road near Penryn suffered $1,000 in damage due to a fire. Del Oro High School junior Antoinette Gaubert was selected to attend Girls State. She will attend the 33rd annual Session of Girls State at CSU Sacramento. Loomis 4-H members representing their club during the County Demonstration Day were Diane Jacobson, Chris Hebard, Stacey Kelly and Katie Gregory. Placer Elementary teachers donating items to benefit the Parents Club included Kathy Leupp (an apple doll), Kathy Johnston (reading games), Isabel Polanco (a terrarium), Lou Ferguson along with artists Nancy Okey and Helen Phillips (a wall hanging). Reynold Capps of Lincoln claimed third place in the California State Community College wrestling championships. 4-H poultry projects, chickens that is, were making a comeback. Leading the countywide poultry program were 4-H members James McKee, Cliff Doty, Roger Warner and Chuck Petrie. The coordinator group responsible for 4-H swine activities were Pam Clark, Kim Kramer, Sandy and Lee Rathbone. They reminded us that, "The pig is one of the most intelligent domestic animals." 75 years ago October 1949 Tuberculosis continued as a public health and sanatorium problem in Placer County. A Central TB Case Register was set up to have a record of every patient, including cases that resist medical care. Robert Hansen of Loomis was a member of the Scout-O-Rama committee for Boy Scout Troops of the Tahoe Area Council. Part of the program included a special radio program featuring a new scout song, "Tomorrow's America." Women of all churches in Roseville, Rocklin, Loomis and Penryn came together to celebrate "World Community Day." Mrs. T.I. Hansen of Roseville opened the meeting. The Health Director for Placer County announced that since the war, a large number of patients had diabetes without knowing it. Diabetes may strike at any age, although most common after the age of 40. Standing guard - oral histories: While his family was interned at Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming, Joe Kageta was sent to war in Europe with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. "Deep in my heart, I didn't expect to come back. I saw some real nasty fighting." As a medic in France, Joe treated injured soldiers and civilians, including many children, and German soldiers. "I was over there eight months, until I got wounded."
