2001: Opposition to 60-acre Turtle Island wins in court

25 years ago March 29, 2001 Services were held for Zola Mary Upcraft, 83, a native of Oklahoma and a resident of Newcastle and Loomis for 40 years. She worked as a clerk at Wells Fargo Bank for 20 years. Services were held for John "Jay" Lewelling, 84, a native of Plains, Texas, and a longtime resident of Placer County. He worked for the Pacific Fruit Exchange during WWII and was credited with honestly maintaining orchard properties of those ranchers of Japanese descent until their return from internment camps. Funeral services were held for Judge George Yonehiro, 78, born in Gold Hill. A 1936 graduate of Loomis School and Roseville High School in 1940, he volunteered as a member of the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart as an infantry sergeant with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during WWII. George served as a judge from 1964 until 1988, retiring as Superior Court Judge. Lorene Owen of Loomis celebrated her 75th birthday with the help of family and friends, including Bea and Bill Tudsbury. After a record-setting 68 straight Sierra Foothill League wins, the Del Oro Lady Eagles lost to the Oakmont softball team. A court decision favored those who opposed the 60-acre area known as Turtle Island and developer David Rosenaur. The property was located on Horseshoe Bar Road at I-80 in Loomis. Kimono-clad members of the Loomis Methodist Youth Fellowship greeting guests at the 47th annual Oriental Food Bazaar included Courtney West, Leigha Falzone and Kristiana Morris. The honor was bestowed upon an individual who made exemplary contributions to high school education. Ann taught at Center High School for 19 years and was considered the "founder" of the math department. 50 years ago March 25, 1976 Services were held for Beverly Mae Norton, 42, a native of Carrington, North Dakota, and a resident of Loomis for 13 years. Beverly was a secretary for the Sisters of Mercy in Auburn. Jim Makimoto, Gary Tyack, Dick Ernst, Craig Jarvis and Roy Hebard Jr. will lead the Loomis Lions Club in a donkey basketball game against the South Placer Kiwanis Club. Penryn School fourth-graders gave their teacher, Mrs. Shumate, a welcome-back party when she returned after giving birth to her son, Michael. Fibreboard in Rocklin was back in full operation after taking measures to clean up problems such as air pollution emissions. Del Oro High School's 1976 Junior Prom Queen Robin Ware and her escort David Angel beamed with joy as last year's queen, Cynthia Lee, crowned the winner. Joining them were crown bearer Blain Schmidt and flower girl Janelle Schmidt, brother and sister. Penryn School fifth-graders attended the "Big John" outdoor education program in Weimar. Project coordinator Stacy Li offered a snack of manzanita berries to students Ron Verlin, Lance Shingleton, Mike Krueger and Don Verlin. There was discussion into a proposed unification of districts into three high school areas - Colfax, Placer and Del Oro. Locally, the district would be formed around Del Oro with a clear educational pattern for students from kindergarten to 12th grade. Helen Pacheco, along with daughter Julie, rode their horses on an evening ride at the Folsom Horse Center on Boulder Road in Loomis. When they rode back, the car was there but the space behind it was empty. Their brand new 1975 Miley two-horse "Ventura" trailer was stolen. On Jan. 22, 1897, the college was ordered sold by the Placer County sheriff. 75 years ago February 1950 John Boyington, who represented the 2nd supervisorial district of Placer County, announced he will run for reelection. Mrs. Dorothy Oakes, president of the Loomis School District Board of Trustees, resigned after nine years of service. The area covered by the 1950 11 County Auburn Census District will be 24,304 square miles. The 1940 Census report found 4,922 farms in the district. The area now forming the 48 states and the District of Columbia was completely enumerated in 1890. Bill's Trading Post in Rocklin was the new Philco dealer for the area with several models already on hand. A Community Pot Luck Dinner to support the March of Dimes will take place in the basement of the Congregational Church of Loomis. Mrs. Frank Nute was named chairman of the Red Cross drive for Loomis. Mrs. Adeline Hansen and Mrs. Brace will assist Marge. During the PTA Dance held in the Loomis School auditorium, a 1942 Buick belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Woggoner was stolen from the grounds. Authorities were notified and later in the night the car was found parked in the same place with signs of a hard drive. Still Standing Guard - oral histories: Harriet Hironaka married Bunny Nakagawa in December 1929. Bunny started a grocery store in Auburn and later in Grass Valley when WWII broke out. "They just sold what they had, 10 cents on the dollar." After being sent to Tule Lake, the controversial questionnaire came out. "They were going to segregate the loyal Americans and those who didn't agree with the U.S. policy." The latter felt they should not serve in the military while their families were interned. Harriet's brother Frank, Howard Nakae, Tom Yego and Bunny all answered yes-yes to the loyalty questions. (continued)
