CAL FIRE opens applications for free firefighting camp for young women

CAL FIRE is accepting applications through Jan. 31, 2026, for Camp Cinder, a free four-day firefighting camp for young women ages 15 to 17. The 2026 camp will run June 22-25 in Redding and June 29-July 2 in San Luis Obispo. Led by female CAL FIRE firefighters, the camp provides hands-on training in wildland and structural firefighting, rescue and helicopter operations, vehicle extrication, emergency medical services and fire and forestry practices. No previous firefighting experience or physical fitness requirements are necessary, and all gear including T-shirts and hats will be provided at no charge to participants. The program aims to provide young women a safe and challenging environment to gain confidence in their ability to excel in firefighting and other careers.
