Eldorado National Forest to host wildfire career exploration event for youth

Ever wonder what it takes to battle a wildfire? Local teenagers will soon have the chance to find out. The U.S. Forest Service Eldorado National Forest is inviting youth ages 14-18 to discover the exciting world of wildland firefighting through its Youth Wildfire Explorer Program, launching this winter in partnership with Scouting America. This isn't your typical after-school program. Participants will meet weekly with real wildland firefighters who will share what it's really like on the front lines. From learning firefighting techniques to community service projects, Explorers will get hands-on experience that could spark a lifelong career. "It's a chance for young people to work together and learn from the experts who do this every day," program organizers said. Parents and teens are invited to an open house on Feb. 2 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Georgetown District Office, 7600 Wentworth Springs Road. It's the perfect opportunity to ask questions, meet the team and learn how to apply. Whether your teenager dreams of a career in firefighting or just wants to try something new and challenging, this program offers real-world skills and unforgettable experiences.
