Ongoing investigation into why Tesla crashed into Folsom light rail lot, killing pedestrian

The investigation continues into why the driver of a Tesla crashed into a light rail parking lot in Folsom on Thursday, Jan. 22, an accident that tragically killed a pedestrian. The crash happened just before 3 p.m. in the area of Folsom Blvd. and Iron Point Road at the Iron Point Light Rail station. According to Folsom Police Commander Andrew Bates, the most current information is the vehicle veered off the roadway for unknown reasons, crashed into the light rail parking lot and struck a pedestrian and parked car before coming to rest on the light rail tracks. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Folsom PD Lt. Lou Wright, and the driver of the Tesla sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital. SacRT reported the vehicle struck the ramp at the station and flipped over onto the tracks. The incident blocked the tracks between the Sunrise and Historic Folsom stations, which prompted a temporary halt of service. Investigators were on scene trying to piece together what caused the crash and SacRT crews inspected the tracks to ensure there was no damage before service was resumed in the evening. The crash created quite a spectacle, with various media outlets on scene taking pictures and video and onlookers also taking pictures.
