Navy League to learn about members' service experiences

Placer County Council of the Navy League members and guests will hear from three members about their time of service to the country during its meeting Feb. 16. Bob Been spent 25 years in the Navy, ending with the rank of commander. He specialized his service in shipyards at Mare Island and Bremerton and did drone research work with the Office of Naval Research. Steve Delikat, serving for 27 years in the U.S. Coast Guard, achieved the rank of captain and served two tours at USGC Air Station Sacramento at McClellan Field, first as engineering officer and then as commanding officer. He flew the C-130, the only fixed-wing unit protecting the West Coast. Mike O'Docharty served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years and achieved the rank of lieutenant commander. He served in many positions, including helicopter crewman, rescue swimmer, Naval flight officer on the E-2C Hawkeye and assistant navigator on the U.S.S. George Washington. The Placer County Council of the Navy League of the United States is a national civilian organization that supports the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and U.S. Flag Merchant Marine. In addition to its more than 200 individual members, the council is supported by three local Community Affiliate Members: TGH Aviation, Lassila Funeral Chapel and Chapel of the Hills. Dinner meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at Auburn Veterans' Memorial Hall, 100 East St. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for a social hour, then dinner and the meeting will begin at 6:30. The dinners are catered at $22 per person, so reservations are necessary and may be made by calling Bonnie Potter at 530-823-2820 by Friday, Feb. 13.
