2001: Loomis growth small compared to other cities

25 years ago July 19, 2001 Howard James Zeman, 74, passed away. A B-17 pilot during WWII, he was shot down over Berlin and became a POW in Barth, Germany. Howard also served in Korea. Del Oro High School Principal Bob Christensen, Kathy Peart and Gerry Nash were recruiting participants in "The Shootout at Twelve Bridges" Golf Tournament. The event would benefit Paul's Place Association. Don't be surprised if Chris Webber, Sacramento Kings player, were to show up in a different uniform. He had a lot of supporters who were in suspense. Five swimmers had their last home meet for the Loomis Basin Dolphins Swim Team. Recognized for their contributions to the team were Tony Black, who had been with the team 13 years; Danny Byrne, 11 years; Chris Inouye, 7 years; Sara Christensen, 10 years; and Jenny Christensen, 10 years. In the last 10 years, the population of Loomis grew 9.7 percent compared to 93.2 percent for Rocklin, Roseville 78.9 percent and Lincoln 54.6 percent. Local sign painter Jim Ingram worked from a sturdy scaffold to hand paint the bright blue and orange logo on the Blue Goose fruit shed located across from Loomis School. Beginning with the 2002 baseball season, South Placer Little League will affiliate with the PONY League. South Placer League President Steve Schmidt made a trip to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and delivered the petition to Little League officials, who approved a boundary change. South Placer spokesperson Patricia Green said, "The league will provide a quality baseball program for all the children in the Newcastle, Penryn and Loomis School Districts. David Keyes, recently promoted to captain by Placer County Sheriff Ed Bonner, assumed command of the county jail. Capt. Keyes previously served as commander of the Loomis Substation. 50 years ago July 15, 1976 Funeral services were held for Ethel Currier, 87, who died in a suspicious fire in her Gold Rush Way home in Penryn. A native of Amherst, Colorado, she was a resident of Penryn for 17 years. Moira Stone, Kerry Overbeck and Jena Stone of the Rocklin 4-H Club observed National Rabbit Week by convincing "Lester" the dog to tow "Smokey" the rabbit around Rocklin in a specially designed wagon. Jesus Galvan, Mary Williams, Vernon Johnson and Monika Miller had to be more careful with their controlled burns after receiving fines. A replacement for Loomis Union School District Board member Charles Wing was needed as a result of a mixup some years ago when trustees Wing and Lois Johnson represented the Loomis School area. Bob Everitt was one possible name mentioned as a replacement. Oliver Sasse represented the Rock Springs area, Cynthia Vollmar - Franklin and Al Nitta - Citrus Colony. Being named to the scholastic honor roll at their colleges were Tom Ruhkala of Rocklin - Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, Iowa, and Richard Dale of Loomis - Oregon State University in Corvallis. Cilla Salisbury of Rocklin and Marion Glover of Auburn, both members of the Soroptimist Club of Rocklin - Loomis, were attending the 24th Biennial Convention of Soroptimist International of the Americas in Boston. Navy recruits James Rea of Rocklin and Jennifer Andrews of Loomis completed basic training. Yesteryear by Vivian Rasmussen: On July 12, 1915, a fire consumed an entire row of buildings on the east side of the street in Loomis. The only building that was saved was Frank Cook's Grocery (now Main Drug Store). When the wind changed, the fire leaped the main street, then called Olive Street (later called Highway 40). 75 years ago December 1949 Funeral services were held for Richard B. Stanaland, 89, a native of Georgia. A resident of Penryn for 18 years, he was a retired farmer. Funeral services were held for Cirino Alves, 51. He died in his home near Loomis after months of ill health. Local churches celebrating the season included the Community Church, Congregational Church, Free Methodist, Rocklin Pilgrim and Loomis Methodist. For Sale: 100 acre grade A Dairy Farm. Norma Beever sang "O Holy Night" and the Glee Club featured Wes Doi, Lawrence Webb, Daniel Sunada, Frank Foster, David Brown and Robert Kaufman. Standing guard - oral histories: Tom Matsuda and his family returned from Tule Lake War Relocation Center in 1946. Tom believed poor communication was the key reason for people's attitudes toward Japanese people at the time of WWII. "The government never knew Asian people real well. If our government knew us as individuals instead of a group of people that was strangers to them, then I don't think this would have happened. Today, we have people of Japanese ancestry in Congress."
