100 years ago: Man takes out ad seeking woman; no triflers

50 years ago Population 3,179 (U.S. Census 1960 and 1970) Interpace: A local movement to "save our pottery" has gained $312,520 in pledges toward an intended goal in excess of $1 million. The drive to purchase the local Interpace plant that has been earmarked for demise by company officials by April 30 is just a week old today. The effort was started by the Interpace employees and the Lincoln Area Chamber of commerce. Sources have indicated there have been quite a few parties interested in purchasing the local plant after Interpace announced its intentions to eliminate it from their holdings. At least three interested parties have already toured the local facilities since Interpace stunned the town with its announcement two weeks ago. Others also are reported interested in the plant. The plant was purchased by its current owner, Pacific Coast Building Products, Inc. which restored the name back to Gladding, McBean. 75 years ago Population 2,410 (U.S. Census 1940 and 1950) March of Dimes: With a total of $715.58 already collected, Eldridge Trott, chairman of the local March of Dimes campaign, today stated the generosity of the people of Lincoln has been most gratifying. Containers are still in the stores and will add to the amount already on hand. Contributions are expected from several organizations and a total of what has gone directly to the Auburn office has not yet been received. It is expected this year's campaign will bring in a larger amount than last year. At the regular meeting last Friday of the Rotary Club, the group more than raised the amount needed to get the hospital bed that had been offered to the club by Giles Chittenden if the group donated at least $50 to the campaign. A total of $105.33 was contributed by the members of this service organization in all to help the fight against polio. The house-to-house march by the Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls brought in $157.98. This part of the campaign took place last Saturday night when local people were asked to leave porch lights burning if they wished to make a donation. There are indications that a few houses may have been missed, but the two groups did a fine job on the whole. Contributions may still be made at the News Messenger office or can be put in the containers in the stores for a few more days. Telephone: Although no official word on when the residents of the Thermalands District will have the use of the new telephone line was available, it was learned the new line will be on a joint pole line of both the PG&E and telephone company. Work is continuing on the erection of new poles and as near as could be determined the new service should be ready soon. School: According to Richard Lee, principal of the Lincoln Union High School, a notice of completion has been filed with the Placer County Superintendent of Schools and the County Recorder on the new high school buildings. With the completion of the buildings, Lincoln can now boast of having one of the most modern functional plans in this district. Note: Referenced is the current Lincoln High School. 100 years ago Population 1,324 (U.S. Census 1900, 1910, and 1920) Rainfall: The season's rainfall up to now is 9 9/10 inches as compared with 15 inches at this time last year. There is a reported 6½ feet of snow at the Summit and 5 feet at Truckee and snow still falling. All danger of water shortage is passed. Lake Tahoe is filled to normal and water is flowing over the gates at Truckee River. Board of Trustees: The street light at the railroad crossing near the depot (Note: 5th Street and Lincoln Boulevard) was ordered adjusted to comply with a request from S.P. officials. The light as it is interferes with the train giving signals. Repairs at the swimming pool such as installing more lockers, painting, etc., as suggested by Trustee Sartain, was taken under advisement. The Board will view the premises on Sunday morning. Mr. Sandow appeared before the Board to make complaint of the condition of the sewer at 3rd and J Street near his place. The condition at this point is very bad and the Board determined to investigate and find a remedy for the condition if possible. Mr. Sloan of San Francisco is coming to Lincoln soon to go over the entire sewer system and suggest remedies for the defects that now exist throughout the system. Mr. Goodenough appeared before the Board in reference to peddlers infesting the town peddling from house to house fake watches and jewelry. These fellows are hard to catch but the Board instructed the Marshall to keep vigilant watch for them. Street Superintendent Hotchkiss was ordered to begin filling in all depressions in streets. Applications of water were granted to purchasers of lots and prospective builders in Western addition. A Mr. Coffer, having purchased the land known as the old China Garden from A. Ristau and contemplating the erection of a campground and oil station near the Auburn Ravine Bridge at the south end of town, requested a lease with permission to clean up and use the ground belonging to the city adjacent to his property. The Board, considering this a move in progress, ordered a lease to said ground be drawn. A respectable campground is an asset to any town. The question of changing the road west of the pottery to a position further west in exchange for ground now belonging to Gladding, McBean & Co. allowing the company to close the present road throwing their property all together was discussed and the request of the company was granted. The question of furnishing trees to citizens for planting on sidewalks was discussed and it was decided to not furnish trees this year as so many trees were furnished last year and so many died for want of care that the Board deemed it an unrewarded expense. The Chamber of Commerce was granted permission to plant trees along the highway inside city limits they intend to care for, and the city to furnish the trees. Labels: The Newcastle Fruit Growers Association have begun stamping the fruit boxes which will be used this season by the growers being in the pool. The label is the Covered Wagon on Brand and also has the Blue Anchor label on the end. Adolph Veerkamp and Mrs. Veerkamp are doing the labeling, and are quite expert at it, as they have both had considerable experience in the labeling business.
