Rock Creek Nature Trail offers 'symphony' of water, bird calls, frogs and wind

Knowing that not every valentine found its match this month, I gave some thought to heartbreak trails. Most of us have a story of the one that got away. I can remember mine like it was yesterday – with a quick trip to Rock Creek Nature Trail. Seven miles above Nevada City on Highway 20, you'll find a wooden sign on the left side of the road for the Washington Ridge Conservation Camp. Take the access road slowly and follow it around. You'll see a sign for Rock Creek Nature Trail. Years ago, a younger man invited me to share this trail with him. He said he just wanted to walk with me. He took my hand and led me among the trees. I thought for sure that on the bench there, I would get my first kiss. I did not. That bench was crushed last spring by a falling tree. How's that for a metaphor for a doomed romance? The drive among the trees to reach the trailhead is beautiful. Ample parking, a restroom and a message board are welcome additions. The trail begins to your left, with a section of handrail to get you started. If the information sheets are available, you can follow the numbered signs and marvel at the variety of trees in the area. Take time to stop on the bridge over the creek and close your eyes. The sound of the water, bird calls, frogs and wind through the trees form a natural symphony. On these cool winter days, bring an extra layer to stay warm. When the sun is shining, it's hard not to stand in a ray of light through the trees and simply listen. There's so much to take in. The decay of fallen trees, covered in moss and lichen, lines the trail. Hanging vines reach to the tops of the tallest pines and back down to the forest floor, surrounding you. The serpentine path of the creek opens into small sandbars that offer a wider view. This trail, despite my heartbreak, is a special place. Rock Creek is a multi-use trail. I've only seen a mountain biker once, and other hikers on just one occasion. It's a lovely and peaceful loop trail, though short – only four-fifths of a mile. To drive out, you can retrace your route and return to Highway 20 about two miles above what used to be the Old 5 Mile House restaurant. Or, if you have a high-clearance vehicle, you can turn right – like I did that first day, sitting next to that young man in his pickup truck. I spent that drive wondering what the heck was wrong with him for not trying to kiss me. This section of Highway 20 meanders through the trees and leads back to Nevada City. I still go back. I've taken my husband, my sons and our dog, Stella. The young man didn't choose me, but he gave me a great gift: many fond memories and this trail.
