Eagles cruise to 8-0 win over Buhach Colony

Playing in a steady rain that fell for most of the game, Vista del Lago's girls' soccer team couldn't have been bothered less, as they scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game Monday night against Buhach Colony on their way to an 8-0 victory. The win, coming in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 3 playoffs, advanced the Eagles, seeded second in the tournament, to the semifinals where they will host Sierra, the No. 3 seed, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. In the game's third minute, Vista's Kayla Abshire got control of the ball at about the 25-yard line on the left flank, ran 15 yards toward the middle of the field and beat two defenders before firing a shot that went off the goalie's hands and into the top corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. About three minutes later, Abshire took a free kick from about 20 yards out from an extreme angle from the left side and inexplicably beat the keeper to the near post to put the Eagles up 2-0. Less than four minutes later, Abshire scored the third goal of the game and the route was on. Before halftime, the Eagles had three more goals scored by Taylor Peyrucain, Emily Harris and Aubree Dunn. In the second half, Kara Layman and Taryn Graham scored goals. Molly McBride and Lauren Jones split time in goal for the Eagles. "I liked how we started and how we controlled things," Vista coach Kennedy Chongo said. "We had three goals in the first 10 minutes and we started off very focused and ready to go. That set the tone for the rest of the game and allowed us to play without pressure." The Eagles now have to play the third seed Sierra with Colfax and Christian Brothers on the other side of the bracket. "I feel we've got as good a chance as the other teams," Chongo said. "It's unpredictable because we're playing teams coming from out of the area that we haven't seen before. What style do they play? Do they have two or three difference makers and how do you adjust? You've just got to trust the way you play and that's the only thing you've got and then you watch the game and make adjustments right away as quickly as you can."
