PUHSD confirms investigation into Trustee Duncan

The Placer Union High School District Board of Trustees confirmed this week an investigation is underway into complaints regarding Trustee Tom Duncan. The investigation follows weeks of public debate surrounding allegations against Duncan from former coaches in the Del Oro High School girls basketball program. During the board's most recent meeting, Board President Jessica Spaid read a statement following closed session saying, "The board received an update from legal counsel regarding complaints regarding Trustee Duncan. As mentioned at the last meeting, given the legal nature of this topic, the district's attorneys are handling it and have been investigating the matter. The board hopes to provide more information on this as it proceeds but may be limited in what we can share, given that it involves personnel and legal matters." The confirmation comes amid continued public disagreement over Duncan's involvement in athletic matters at Del Oro. During the Jan. 20 board meeting, multiple speakers during public comment called for an independent investigation. Public comment at Tuesday's meeting reflected a divided community, as several speakers defended Duncan while others called for an investigation. In a written statement, the district said it is working with its insurance carrier and legal counsel, which has retained an independent third party to review concerns raised regarding Duncan. The district said the investigator will operate independently of the board and district administration and is intended to provide an objective, thorough examination of the facts. The statement said the decision to move forward with an outside review reflects the board's commitment to transparency, accountability and good governance. The board will provide information consistent with applicable law once the review is complete. No timeline for completion of the review has been provided.
