25 years ago Aug. 30, 2001 Graveside services were held for Robert Eugene King, 70, a native of Oroville, raised in Dobbins, and resided in Loomis for the past 20 years. He was a WWII and Korean War veteran, serving with the U.S. Air Force. Services were planned for Robert Henry Jung, 84, a native of Bloomer, Wisconsin and a Placer County resident for the past 12 years. He obtained the rank of Senior Master Sergeant in the Air Force. Betty and Garvin Jabusch celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a 5 day long party to build a "Habitat for Humanity" house. Sons Mark and Roger, who were contractors, led 160 volunteers while Garv coordinated the project. Betty worked on the building plus helped prepare lunches. Daughter Diane Bailey was in charge of accommodations for out-of-town workers. Many workers were from what the Jabusches called their "church family," members of the Methodist Church of Loomis. Since the early 1990's, Garv and Betty had worked on 90 Habitat projects, a couple of times with Jimmy and Rosalind Carter. The Loomis Basin Historical Society was aware of the significant contributions to our area's history by its citizens of Chinese descent. The organization held a public dedication of a plaque honoring the Old Loomis Chinatown and the Hoo-Quong Family at Loomis South Park. The late Suey Quong was born in the Chinatown and spent his entire life in that area. More than100 members of the Hoo-Quong family - the children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of Hoo Yuen Lung and his wife Ong Shee - were in attendance. Ed Horton was the Master of Ceremonies for the event. His great grandparents, Elisha and Nancy Webb, owned the Chinese property and were one of the only ones willing to rent land to the Chinese. Luen Hoo-Fong spoke during the program. She was one of nine Hoo Quong children born in Loomis Chinatown. Mae Hoo Ong, her only surviving sibling, also attended the dedication. Mary Ann Quong, widow of Suey Quong, thanked the Historical Society for the honor bestowed on her husband. 50 years ago Aug. 26, 1976 Services were conducted for Erwin Remus, 70, a native of Germany and a resident of Loomis. He was a retired monument stone cutter. Dennis Alfred Baskerville, 40, a native of England and a resident of the Loomis area for the past 21 years, passed away. He was employed at Alcan Cable Company. Airman Robert Barrow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Barrow of Newcastle, was assigned to Chanute AFB, Illinois to receive training in fire protection. Mr. and Mrs. Rolf (Sonny) Moeller of Loomis along with daughters Kristin, Inger, and Sigrid, were on a tour of the U.S. Capitol with Congressman Harold "Bizz" Johnson. The Moeller family was in Washington, D.C. for a bicentennial tour of historic American sites. John Wagner of Richardson's Mens Wear in Loomis was honored by being initiated into the "Order of the Most Neighborly Natives of Placer County." He was cited for exceptional courtesy and friendliness. Bill Radakovitz, 14, of Rocklin and Jenny Gire, age 10 of Loomis, will play Munchkins in the Music Circus production of "The Wizard of Oz." Big winners in swine market competition at the State Fair included Loomis 4-H Club members Charlie West, Roger Warner, Fred Kramer, Scott Mason, and Danny Warner. Showing their horses at the fair included Gary Bowler, Jennifer Nash, Kelly Potter, and Jeanne Bowler. Sabrina Law showed her Suffolk sheep and Jenifer Beadle presented her 4-H demonstration titled "Horsin' Around." Yesteryear by Vivian Rasmussen: In the early 1920's, the town of Loomis continued to rebuild after a fire consumed the business district in 1915. However on Memorial Day in 1947, fire was still able to wreak havoc. The Gerrard building was used as a "shuck" or box making material for the California Fruit Exchange Company. Twenty car loads of shuck, worth $50,000 or more, went up in flames. The Pacific Fruit Exchange also burned in the fire. 75 years ago January 1950 The new officers for the United Council of Church Women were Mrs. J. Ross Bahrs of Penryn, Mrs. Otto Helms and Mrs. Ben Takahashi of Loomis, Mrs. Joe Oates and Mrs. Harvey Bell of Roseville. Robert and Sam Radovich published a newspaper of general circulation, The Lincoln Clarion. Robert Davis, farm advisor of Placer County, urged all dairymen to attend a meeting to discuss artificial insemination. The goal was to get better bull service to increase the production of milk and butterfat. Playing in theaters was Jane Greer, William Bendix and Robert Mitchum starring in "The Big Steal." Nash Motors exhibited a two-passenger car that would give 45-50 MPG for $1,000 or less. But there was a catch. Phone Loomis 2542. The Tuberculosis Sanatorium at Weimar served 15 counties for treatment. Many TB patients made their residence in the higher altitudes of Placer County, going on the out-moded assumption that particular locations were conducive to their care - it's treatment, not climate. Still Standing Guard - oral histories: Victor Montes recalled how his foster parents, John and Gertrude Griffin, helped find tenants for vacant houses left by families of Japanese descent living at internment camps. There were many residents of Placer County that didn't approve of what the Griffins were doing. Victor said, "They were just superb people to take all that. To see if protection was needed, the FBI became involved because of the threats over what the Griffins were doing."
