Police warn residents of vehicle repair scams in parkinglots

Regular vehicle maintenance and repair is expected, but what's not expected is fraudulent repair scams. That's why Lincoln Police are reminding the public to be vigilant and keep a watchful eye out for mobile 'parking lot repair' scams following last week's repair scam that targeted an innocent elderly couple going about their day. "On Monday we received a call regarding a possible fraud in progress. Officers responded and located an elderly couple with an unknown individual attempting to repair their personal vehicle, a press release from the Lincoln Police Department stated. "Through an investigation, the elderly couple were identified as the victims of a vehicle repair fraud scheme, where the suspect would attempt to 'fix' a vehicle while asking the victims to withdraw cash from a nearby ATM. The 'fixing' caused additional damage to the victim's vehicle." Officers conducted a probation search of the suspect's vehicle on scene and located approximately $23,000 in cash, which was seized. Two individuals were arrested for felony elder abuse, conspiracy, and vandalism. "Great job LPD, there is nothing worse than criminals that take advantage of our elderly citizens, and I'm glad someone made that call, god bless you all," commented Doug Ellison on the Lincoln Police Facebook post. "Thank you LPD, for protecting seniors and the citizens of all ages in Lincoln," commented Joan B. Browne. If you witness any strange behavior in public parking lots, you are urged to call police and report the suspected individuals. Protect yourself and check in on elderly friends, family members, and neighbors, a quick conversation can prevent a costly and fraudulently damaging scam. Police believe there could be additional victims of the fraud vehicle repair scam.
