DeLeon places seventh at state

Oak Ridge senior Jordan DeLeon battled injury all season, so she was proud to finish seventh in the 120-pound weight class at the CIF State Wrestling tournament in Bakersfield over the weekend, thereby bettering her eighth-place finish a year ago. DeLeon won her first two matches before losing 8-3 to Evelyn Lopez of Hamilton, the eventual sixth-place finisher. She won her next match 10-4 before falling to Itzel Herrera from Corona, who went on to place fifth. DeLeon, unlike last year, won her final match of the tournament by pinning Addison Bernstein of Orland to place seventh. "My goals to be honest were kind of all over the place this year," said DeLeon, who has been wrestling since her freshman year. "I had to deal with a lot of injuries, but at the end of the day I just wanted to have fun and wrestle my best and keep improving. Obviously, I would've loved to place higher, but it's just how it goes. I am still really proud of placing seventh and am really proud with how I wrestled." DeLeon finished the season with an 18-5 record. She said she couldn't have had the season she had without her supporters. "My strengths as a wrestler is my support system," DeLeon said. "I really couldn't have made it without them." DeLeon said she would like to wrestle in college, although she's not yet sure where that will be.
