Kiley announces run for District 6

Congressman Kevin Kiley, who currently serves California's third District, which includes areas of Placer County and Folsom, has announced plans to run for re-election in District 6 in the upcoming elections. District 6, like several others in California, has been re-drawn after the passage of Proposition 50 by California voters in last year's election. The Rocklin-based Republican assumed his current office on Jan. 3, 2023, with his term ending in January 2027. Kiley's current District 3 is the largest in the state and encompasses 10 counties, but Proposition 50 changed the boundaries of the district significantly by breaking it up into six sections, making it smaller and leaning more Democratic due to it now including areas of Sacramento County. The new district Kiley will be vying for represents the communities of Orangevale, Rocklin and Roseville. In a statement, Kiley said even though he might have had politically "easier" races in other districts, ultimately he chose to run for District 6 because it is not only where he grew up but where his heart is. "I was born, raised and went to local public schools in Placer and Sacramento counties, which I've always called home," said Kiley in a statement. "They've been the core of my district during my time in elected office, and that's as it should be, that's what representation is about." The race for District 6 already appears crowded, with former State Senator Richard Pan announcing his plans to run along with Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho, West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero and Republicans Christine Bish, Raymond Riehle and Craig Deluz. Ami Bera, the current representative for District 6, has announced plans to run for re-election in Kiley's re-drawn District 3. Kiley has become an increasingly visible member of Congress who opted to stay in Washington, DC, during last year's government shutdown while his Republican cohorts went home. Kiley detailed this decision, which was at odds with Republican leadership, during an appearance on The New York Times' podcast, The Daily, in 2025. The re-drawing of Congressional districts became a heated political fight in 2025 as state politicians in California, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas and Utah altered congressional maps to give their parties an advantage in the 2026 elections. In California, before the maps could be re-drawn, voters had to approve Proposition 50, which called for overriding the state constitution and allowing politicians to redraw district maps. Now that the new maps are approved by voters, they will be in effect for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 elections.
