Folsom simplifies reviews for Historic District projects

The city of Folsom adopted updates to the municipal code to make it faster and easier for property and business owners to complete minor projects in the Historic District. Certain projects that once required a full Historic District Commission review can now be approved by city staff within two to three weeks instead of the previous three-month process, officials announced online last week. The changes affect property and business owners with projects like new business signs, exterior renovations to non-historic buildings, small additions and minor structures like sheds or garages. Projects like these are now eligible for staff-level review, and fees have been reduced for applicants who qualify, staff said. The updates simplify the review process, reduce costs and help preserve the unique historic character while supporting business activity and reinvestment. The Folsom Historic District Commission approved the amendments after receiving feedback from residents, business owners and customers about improving efficiency and responsiveness in the permit process. The city of Folsom has also updated its Historic District Resources webpage to provide guidance on common residential projects and help property owners determine whether design review or building permits are required.
