2001: Little League team stripped of World Series finish

25 years ago Sept. 13, 2001 Don Trammel, owner of Jimboys Tacos, treated Boy Scouts of Troop 12, Loomis to lunch. The scouts were sprucing up the town prior to the Eggplant Festival. The scouts were JP Newsom, Colin Nitta, Erich Grunder, Micah Nolan, Ian McPherson, and Chris Riddle. Recognized for their contribution to the Loomis Lions Club were Roy Hebard, Sr. and Jim Johnson. Dot Shiro and Helen Florance were signing up cooks for the "Celebrity Chief" fundraiser to benefit the Loomis Basin Heritage Foundation. Dinner would be served at the Blue Anchor Fruit Shed just left of the old train depot at the end of Horseshoe Bar Road. Local musical artist Mike Gram, also known as "Music Mike," will perform at the Roseville Main Library and the Maidu Branch. Enjoying the sun during the Del Oro High School Freshmen Barbeque included Carolyn Owen, Tristan Mayhew, Gina Dunn, and Deanna Owen. Loomis Community Nursery School teacher Marilyn Stitt put a name tag on Sam Mower prior to activity time. The school was a parent participation co-op founded 31 years ago on the campus of the First United Methodist Church of Loomis. The Bronx New York team took 3rd place in the Little League World Series just completed at Williamsport, PA. Their star pitcher struck out 47 batters and pitched a perfect game during the series. However, the pitcher turned out to be 14 years old passing himself off as a 12 year old. The NY team was stripped of its 3rd place finish. His father falsified the boy's birth certificate. 4-H Club members showing their animals at the Gold Country Fair in Auburn included Kara Raibley with her swine "Maple" and "Bubba" along with Matthew Lombardo with "Tom Sawyer," at 39 pounds it was the largest turkey at the fair. Del Oro FFA members also showing their animals included Ashley Coughran with her steer "Packer" and Shalena Laws with her Heifer named "Darma." 50 years ago Sept. 9, 1976 Funeral services were held for Scott Arthur Stubbs, 26, a native of Los Angeles ad a resident of Rancho Cordova. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Stubbs of Penryn. Dean Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lou Wilson of Loomis, won a 3-year Air Force ROTC scholarship at UCLA. A refugee from Vietnam, Nguyen Van Chuc, was the father of a family of nine living and working in Loomis. The family's gas and tire shop downtown was prosperous. All the family was adjusting to American life. "The small town atmosphere has helped a lot," Nguyen said. He was concerned about his people as 70% of the employable refugees had no jobs. Nguyen would like to return to his home country. He would like to see South Vietnam become a socialist-democracy, "but not Communist." Was his whole family anxious to return? "No, only myself," he said. New Del Oro head football coach, Steve March, followed the Vince Lombardi philosophy, "Winning isn't everything, but preparing to win is." Coach March was a 1963 Del Oro graduate. The Del Oro Golden Eagle Marching Band returned home after their annual band camp at Sly Park in Pollack Pines. Brian Siewert was the field conductor, the band captain was Linda DuPriest and flag team captain was Kim Okey. Bill Naylor, a 1974 Del Oro graduate, earned a basketball scholarship to the University of Hawaii in Hilo. Yesteryear by Vivian Rasmussen: It was hard to find anyone who was a better mechanic than John Vierra of the Associated Service in Loomis back in the late 1920s and 1930s. His garage also had a root beer stand operated in the late 1920s by Myrtle Brooks Colvin. She also sold ripe fruit along with the Hires Root Beer. Johnnie remained at the garage until 1937 when the main road through town was straightened. He then moved his business out to his ranch west of town. 75 years ago January 1950 Funeral services were held for Bert A. Cassidy, publisher and editor of the Auburn Journal since 1919. He was a State Senator for a number of years. After several weeks of absence, Miss Faye Adams and Mr. Charles Gardner returned to their duties in the Loomis Union Elementary School. Miss Edna Lardner and Mrs. R. McMillan substituted for them during their absence. Lloyd Brace was the owner of a new 1950 Chevrolet purchased from Mehl Chevrolet of Loomis. The Edwards Air Force Base held a special dedication ceremony to rename the field in honor of Captain Glen W. Edwards of Lincoln who was killed on an experimental flight with a jet bomber. The people of Loomis believed in keeping the local Boy Scout troop by raising $150 to meet the troop's annual quota required. To promote healthier children, the Loomis School P.T.A. prepared to handle the pre-school and pre-kindergarten child Health Program. Mrs. Alma Larsen organized rides for those who needed transportation. Gail Russell and Dennis O'Keefe starred in "The Great Dan Patch." The Placer County Holy Ghost Association will hold its annual election of officers in St. Joseph's Parish Hall in Lincoln according to Manuel Aguilar, secretary of the order. He also announced plans for the annual spring celebration of the group at McBean Memorial Park in Lincoln. Still Standing Guard - oral histories: Nobuya Nimura was born in Sacramento in 1927. His father was a tenant farmer which meant you raised, packed and shipped the fruit from a ranch for 60 percent while the owner got 40 percent. "With that 60 percent you have to pay for all spray materials, everything to grow the fruit. You're lucky to end up with some money in your pocket at the end of the year," Nob said.
