Folsom revives beloved snail race tradition as city celebrates 80th Birthday on May 9

Long before youth travel sports and packed weekend schedules became the norm, Folsom families gathered around a very different kind of competition. The city's beloved Snail Race — a quirky, community-built tradition dating to at least 1982 — is making its return Saturday, May 9, as part of Folsom's 80th birthday celebration at City Lions Park, 403 Stafford Street. The free, family-friendly event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and promises games, entertainment, train rides and plenty of the lighthearted spirit that made the original race a local legend. The original Snail Race was no small affair. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce to raise money for a local sports complex, the competition drew creative competitors who tried everything from blowing on their snails to feeding them beer in hopes of gaining a competitive edge. One participant even bedazzled his snail's shell for good measure. Former U.S. Congressman Vic Fazio, who passed away in 2022, was among those who took part. The Folsom Athletic Association eventually took over the event and ran it for a decade, using proceeds to fund the Lois Young High School Scholarship. Kara Lofthouse, a member of the Folsom Cordova Unified School District Board of Education, says the race holds a special place in the city's identity. "The Snail Race is one of those wonderfully quirky traditions that makes Folsom feel like a true small town and community," Lofthouse said. "It's simple, joyful and something families across generations can participate in together. Events like this remind us that community isn't just built in big moments — it's built in small, playful traditions where neighbors gather, kids laugh, and everyone shares in the fun." She added that the race has taken on a deeper meaning over the years, saying, "The Snail Race has become a symbol of Folsom's spirit: creative, family-centered, and proud of its local traditions." Lofthouse is equally enthusiastic about what the revival means for today's families. "Bringing the Snail Race back feels like bringing back a piece of Folsom's heart," she said. "It gives today's kids the chance to experience the same kind of lighthearted community event their parents may have enjoyed growing up." Many adults who raced snails as children are now raising their own families in Folsom, making the day a rare opportunity to recreate the kind of core memories that stick with a person for life. "We love creating opportunities where families can slow down — like snail slow — connect, and make memories together. And the Snail Race is the perfect example of that." "Let your kids take the lead, cheer loudly for every snail, and enjoy the moment rather than worrying about who wins. Educational curriculum developed by The Rooted Learner and Wild Roots Learning Center will also be available on site. "Community events like this are about much more than the race," Lofthouse said.
