Historic Folsom launches free self-guided walking tour through city's Gold Rush roots

History has a new way of getting around in Folsom. The City of Folsom, in partnership with the Folsom Public Library, Folsom Historic District Association, Folsom History, Visit Folsom and California State Parks, has launched a free self-guided walking tour threading through the neighborhood's most storied corners — from the brick-lined stretch of Sutter Street to the railroad turntable and depot, Leidesdorff Plaza and the Truss Bridge overlooking the American River. Powered by the STQRY app, the tour layers historic photographs and short audio stories over a 1.5- to 2-mile route visitors can begin at any point and complete at their own pace, with most finishing in one to two hours. Complimentary parking is available at the 315-space garage at 905 Leidesdorff Street, leashed dogs are welcome outdoors, and the route connects to the American River and Jedediah Smith trail network for those who want to keep exploring after the tour wraps up. Folsom joins a growing movement of Foothill and Sacramento-area communities using technology to bring local history to life on foot.
