From backyard garden to MasterChef plate

One of the biggest lessons I learned as a top-10 contestant on MasterChef was simple: We eat with our eyes first. Before the judges ever took a bite, they were already evaluating the dish. Color, balance and presentation mattered just as much as flavor. In fact, many times the judges would gravitate toward the most visually appealing plates before fully tasting them. That lesson stuck with me, especially when I'm cooking with ingredients fresh from the garden. One of my favorite salads brings together vibrant spinach and lettuce greens, earthy beets, crisp radishes, golden berries and creamy blue cheese, all finished with a bright orange vinaigrette. It's the kind of dish that looks like it belongs in a competition kitchen, but the best part is that many of the ingredients can be grown in your backyard. And when you grow your own food, the colors are even more stunning. Garden-fresh salad The beauty of this salad comes from its contrast: deep greens, ruby red beets, bright radishes, golden berries and creamy crumbles of blue cheese. Ingredients: Fresh spinach Mixed lettuce greens Roasted sliced beets Thinly sliced radishes Golden berries (ground cherries) Crumbled blue cheese Arrange the greens on a platter and layer the beets, radishes, golden berries and blue cheese on top. Think about presentation the way a MasterChef contestant would: colorful, balanced and inviting. Orange vinaigrette This citrus dressing brightens the salad and ties everything together. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons vinegar 2-3 teaspoons grated orange zest ⅓ cup fresh orange juice 2 teaspoons honey 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard ⅓ cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons minced shallot ½ teaspoon sea salt ¼ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper Directions: Whisk together vinegar, orange zest, orange juice, honey and Dijon mustard. Slowly drizzle in olive oil while whisking until emulsified. Stir in minced shallot, sea salt and black pepper. Drizzle over the salad just before serving. Grow your own Nearly everything in this salad can come from the garden. Spinach and lettuce grow quickly and thrive in raised beds or containers. Radishes are one of the fastest vegetables you can plant. Beets offer both delicious roots and nutritious greens. Golden berries are a fun addition that produce sweet fruit wrapped in delicate papery husks. When you harvest these ingredients yourself, the dish becomes more than a salad; it becomes a celebration of the garden. And as I learned on the MasterChef journey, sometimes the most beautiful plate starts long before the kitchen. It starts in the garden.
