California offers $2.5M in grants for safe, clear waterways

Whether you're a weekend kayaker, a seasoned angler or a family loading up the boat for a summer afternoon on the lake, California's waterways are a shared treasure worth protecting. The California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways is putting up to $2.5 million to help local agencies do exactly that, with grant applications now open through April 30 for two programs aimed at keeping California's rivers, lakes and coastal waters safer and cleaner for everyone who uses them. The funding is split between two competitive programs. The Boating Safety and Enforcement Equipment program makes up to $1.5 million available to local government agencies that need patrol boats, rescue equipment, personal watercraft and replacement engines to support recreational boating safety operations — money backed by the U.S. Coast Guard's Recreational Boating Safety Program. The Surrendered and Abandoned Vessel Exchange program adds another $1 million for agencies working to remove the derelict and ghost vessels that too often turn up blocking waterways and creating hazards for boaters trying to enjoy a clean day on the water. Last year alone, the state funded 20 safety equipment grants and 26 abandoned vessel removals, putting more than $2.2 million to work across the state. Local agencies interested in applying can attend free virtual workshops on March 24 — the safety equipment session runs from 10 to 10:45 a.m. and the abandoned vessel session from 1 to 1:45 p.m. — by contacting Johanna.Naughton@parks.ca.gov for the first workshop or Gina.Disney@parks.ca.gov for the second. All applications must be submitted through the state's Online Grant Application System by 3 p.m. April 30.
