Twin Lakes Food Bank serving Folsom for 40 years

Twin Lakes Food Bank has been serving the community of Folsom for 40 years, dating to its opening in 1986. The food bank's primary purpose, of course, is to provide food for those who can't afford it. The food bank is open from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays and also once a month on Monday nights. Along with the food it gets from grocery stores, the food bank also has its own garden which provides additional organic fruits and vegetables to the community that they don't receive from the grocers. The food bank's mission, as located on its website, reads, "Sharing God's love by mobilizing the community to provide food and support to hungry families." "We also have a program where we go out into the community and deliver food to seniors who can't make it out; seniors who are homebound," Twin Lakes community coordinator Rachel Hill said. "We also work with Folsom Lake College and provide food for students who are paying for school and don't have extra money." Ever expanding, the food bank is currently raising money for a new building to be located behind Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, which they plan to move into within the next few years. The success of the food bank over the years is because of two reasons, besides the fact that people need food; the support of the Folsom community and those who volunteer at the food bank. "I've never experienced the amount of overwhelming support this food bank receives," Hill said. "We're talking from other businesses, individuals, leaders of the community, the city of Folsom itself, who is a major supporter. Community Service Day, we're one of the big recipients of that day because of our city wide food drive. "Another reason for our success is our volunteers. Our 150 volunteers are at the heart of what we do. They're the ones connecting with our guests on a weekly basis. They're the ones who get to understand why we do what we do. The boy scouts and girl scouts and local churches are a big help. We also rely on grants and donors. All the community support and volunteers is the reason we're successful. We have so many people requesting to help us that we have to find ways for them to serve."
