9 innings to life: The day a prison break delayed a ballgame

On Feb. 8, 1942, baseball inside Folsom State Prison was delayed for two hours, not because of stormy weather but because of a prison break. It sounds like the opening scene of a movie, but for decades, games like this were very real. For more than 40 years, major-league and Pacific Coast League players traveled to Folsom to play the prison's own team, the Represa Eagles, on a diamond carved into the recreation yard beneath the prison's looming cellblocks. And on that February day in 1942, as big-league talent warmed up for an 11 a.m. first pitch, two inmates were slipping through a cut fence, swimming a canal near Folsom Dam and scrambling down the rocky embankment toward the American River. The escape attempt was short-lived. One man was caught near the prison walls. The other made it several miles downriver before being spotted by three teenagers hunting blue jays near Mississippi Bar. Within hours, both were back in custody, and the game went on. Seven innings were squeezed in before the strict prison curfew. Bill Morebeck's All-Stars, which consisted of a collection of major leaguers and top professionals, scored 24 runs. The lineup featured a surprising amount of recognizable talent. Dom DiMaggio, the Boston Red Sox outfielder and younger brother of Joe, collected a hit, though the Sacramento Bee box score famously misspelled his name as "DiMago." Yankees pitcher Tiny Bonham took the mound, while Eddie Lake reached base seemingly at will, drawing four walks, adding a hit and scoring five runs from the leadoff spot. Gus Suhr, a longtime big leaguer with Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, went 5 for 6 and was one of the game's most dedicated participants, returning to Folsom year after year. Joe Marty of the Phillies, a fan favorite inside the prison walls, added three hits and had such a connection to the inmates he once contributed to the prison newspaper as a correspondent. Even against that level of talent, nearly every inmate in the lineup managed at least one hit, enough for bragging rights that likely lasted a lifetime. Baseball had been part of Folsom State Prison since the 1890s. By the 1920s, the Represa Eagles were considered one of Northern California's strongest semi-pro teams. They routinely posted dominant records and occasionally defeated their visiting professional opponents. In 1943, they stunned the All-Stars 6-4. The driving force behind the program was William "Bill" Ryan, a Sacramento native who joined Folsom as a guard in 1913 and later became the prison's athletic director. Ryan believed recreation, especially baseball, could be more than distraction. It could provide dignity and structure for the prisoners, but most importantly, it could provide hope. Over four decades, Ryan organized intramural leagues, holiday sporting exhibitions and the annual showcase game that brought baseball stars behind four-foot-thick granite walls. The visiting players were unpaid. Many returned year after year. A 1941 editorial in The Sporting News praised them for "bringing a little light into an otherwise drab life." That light mattered, as Folsom in the early 20th century could be harsh and unforgiving. Ryan himself survived a 1937 prison riot in which the warden was killed and Ryan was stabbed seven times. He returned to work weeks later. Months after the riot, baseball resumed. When Ryan retired in 1954 after more than 40 years of service, inmates organized "Bill Ryan Day," giving him a rocking chair and performing a vaudeville show about his life. He had witnessed a shift in prison philosophy from rock-breaking punishment to rehabilitation and industrial training. In many ways, the story of baseball at Folsom Prison mirrors the story of Folsom itself. Founded during the Gold Rush era and incorporated in 1946, the city grew alongside the prison and the dam that powered it. Folsom's history carries toughness, resilience and reinvention themes that echo from the cellblocks to the ballfield.
