Whitney rallies past Rocklin in Hometown Throwdown

There was little standing room remaining at Kathy Lund Park Friday night, as local softball families lined the entire field to watch the Rocklin and Whitney High School softball teams meet for the annual Hometown Throwdown. The crosstown rivalry has been built on years of shared fields, youth programs and community ties, and this season was for far more than just bragging rights as it was a rematch of last season's Division II Sac-Joaquin Section championship game. Both teams entered Friday's contests battling for the top spot in the Sierra Foothill League and ranked top 40 in the state. This time, it was Whitney that flipped the script. Trailing 3-0 early, the Wildcats rallied behind timely hitting and a resilient performance in the circle from sophomore Taylor Cordell to defeat Rocklin 5-3. Rocklin came out sharp. Cat Alston opened the scoring with a lead off home run in the first inning, and the Thunder added two more runs in the second behind an RBI single from Addie Titlow and a bases-loaded walk to Sammie Snell to take a 3-0 lead. Whitney coach April Steele briefly considered making a pitching change as momentum leaned Rocklin's way, but instead gave sophomore Taylor Cordell a chance to respond. "I go to her in the dugout, and I said, 'They're fighting for you. Are you willing to fight for them?'" Steele said. "And she said, 'I'm ready to fight for them.' And it changed the momentum." Cordell settled in from there, holding the Thunder to two hits for the remainder of the game. After allowing three runs over the first two innings, Cordell held Rocklin scoreless the rest of the way. She finished with eight strikeouts and worked through five walks, leaning on her defense and the support around her. "All these girls have my back," Cordell said. "Every single one of them came up to me during the game and was like, 'Tay, you got this.' We're in it, and we're going to keep fighting." The momentum began shifting in the top of the third inning before Whitney's rally fully took shape. Center fielder Rebecca Rau cut down a runner at the plate on a throw home, preserving the deficit and igniting the dugout. Rau also robbed Rocklin's Payton Prior of a grand slam earlier in the game that kept Whitney within striking distance. "I saw her coming home and just let it go," Rau said of her throw to the plate. "Jayla (Bradford) did a great job getting the tag down. It was definitely a team effort." Cordell didn't hesitate when asked how big that moment was. "When that happened, we all just felt like, 'This is our game,'" said Cordell. Whitney began to chip away in the third inning, scoring twice to make it 3-2, before delivering the decisive blow in the fifth. Rau helped spark the inning with a leadoff double, setting the tone at the top of the lineup, continuing her strong season in the leadoff role. "I really just try to do whatever I can to get on base for my team," Rau said. "Whether it's bunting, hitting, slapping — just whatever the team needs." Sidney Kleiner followed with an RBI double to center field, Bri Seffens added an RBI single down the left field line, and Brooklyn Steele capped the rally with another RBI double to give Whitney a 5-3 lead. Seffens and Kleiner each finished with two hits and two RBIs, providing the backbone of Whitney's offense. From there, Cordell closed it out. Despite traffic on the bases, Rocklin couldn't break through late. The Thunder finished with six hits, with Titlow and Maddie Williams each collecting two, and drew five walks but left eight runners on base. Rocklin pitcher Payton Prior went the distance, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out seven, as the Thunder played error-free defense behind her. Prior also reached a career milestone, notching her 500th career strikeout in the fourth inning. But Whitney's combination of timely hitting, defensive execution and composure in key moments proved decisive. "I think we're just a really passionate team," Cordell said. "We're hungry for every win." The win continues a strong run for Whitney (12-4, 7-0 SFL), which remains unbeaten in SFL play and adds another chapter to a rivalry that continues to swing back and forth each season. For players on both sides who grew up attending this game, the winning moment carried extra weight. "This game is something we've all looked up to since we were really young," Rau said. "It's really special to come out here and win it."
