Fixing public education, pt. 7: Why free post-secondary education matters

Equity is the main reason free post-secondary education matters. One of the cornerstones of Finland's successful transformation of its school system is an unwavering commitment to equity. It is a deeply held belief that no child's education should be limited by the circumstances of their birth. Which is to say the poorest child should have access to the same opportunities as the richest. They believe this so strongly that private schools are not allowed. Yes, in Finland, the richest child must go to public school alongside the poorest. Remote rural students, urban students, minority students – all must have access to the same high-quality education. If you think that means the rich and educated might be fully invested in quality public education, well I think so, too! I doubt we'd succeed in abolishing private schools in the US. But we can focus on equity in the distribution of funding and resources. In creating bridges for the poor and marginalized to access good schooling and all that entails. Small classes, small schools, decent facilities, access to tech, educated teachers. And we can make post-secondary education free. We can expand the kinds of education available after high school to include a range of vocational skills. We can make "going back" to get more education free. Think about it. What are we looking for with education? We are preparing the next generation for their life of industry. For the curiosity and creation their brains will bring to our culture. We need flexible, skilled, educated lifetime learners to keep our rapidly changing world up, running and thriving. Let's tear down the road blocks and open the doors to all. If we've done a good job of nurturing that love of learning, then the gifted are going to be coming out of the woodwork.
