Feeding the Foothills helps families facing food insecurities in Rocklin

Since 1970, Feeding the Foothills, a local foodbank founded by Yolanda Mendivil, has assisted the community in offering free food across the community to local families facing food insecurities within Placer, El Dorado, and Nevada counties. Rocklin Residents in need of food arrived at Johnson Springview Park, located on 5480 5th Street, to secure a free food distribution box last Friday. Feeding the Foothills provides free nutritious foods to the community of Rocklin on the fourth Friday of every month from 8-10 a.m. in rain or shine. The free food boxes include fresh produce, proteins, dairy products, baked goods, and shelf-stable pantry staples. Through their 'Pantry to Go' and drive-thru programs in Placer, El Dorado, and surrounding counties, they also distribute canned goods, cereals, beans, and other non-food essentials. Over 1 in 5 California residents are food insecure, a staggering rate that persists across the state every year. While food insecurity affects 40,000 residents in Placer County, approximately 11-12 percent of the population including roughly 16 percent of children according to PlacerCounty.gov "More than 55,000 people in El Dorado, Nevada, and Placer counties they serve do not know where their next meal will come from and more than 13,000 are children. Over 30 percent of the area seniors report having to choose between food and paying for medicine or medical care." said the Placer Food Bank. Feeding the Foothills operates by previously announced location based food pick-ups, residents can show up to the designated pick-up areas, to receive food residents must verify their address and identity, then volunteers will load their vehicles accordingly.
