Placer Supervisors commemorate county's 175th anniversary

The Placer County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution commemorating the county's 175th anniversary during its March 24 meeting. "Placer County is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year, marking a milestone that reflects generations of community, innovation and resilience," Placer County CEO Daniel Chatigny said while introducing the item. "Our 175th anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate our past, recognize the people and industries that built this county and look ahead to a bright future." Placer County was established on April 25, 1851, during the Gold Rush era, from portions of Sutter and Yuba counties, the staff report notes. Bryanna Ryan, museums administrator for Placer, shared "Placer" comes from the type of mining that was utilized in the area using water and the type of gold that was here. Ryan provided the board with an overview of Placer's beginnings and history, which can be viewed at vimeo.com/1177469619?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci. The board commemorated the occasion with a photo. According to the county, other ways the county is celebrating the 175-year milestone include: The creation of the anniversary emblem which features golden 175 numerals to pay homage to the gold rush, snow-covered mountains, the Foresthill Bridge and agricultural farmland. Placer residents can explore a digital timeline of the county's important historical moments beginning April 1. The community will also have the opportunity to contribute their family photos and stories. Placer County Track and Field Championship, April 18: High school athletes from across the county will compete in the Placer County Track and Field Championship at Twelve Bridges High School, 2360 Fieldstone Drive in Lincoln. A friendly "Guns and Hoses" competition between law enforcement and firefighters, along with athletes from the local chapter of the Special Olympics, will begin at 9 a.m. State of the County presentation, May 6: Board Chair Shanti Landon will present the State of the County at a Sun City Lincoln Hills community breakfast. The public is invited to attend. Fanny Bridge ribbon cutting and block party, May 17: Fanny Bridge, Tahoe City's most cherished landmark, recently reopened following a $10.6 million replacement project. The ribbon cutting and block party will be held in celebration of the opening and a booth honoring the 175th anniversary will be featured. Placer County Fair celebration, June 25-28: Fair goers can look forward to special activities, including giveaways and community celebrations, during the four-day event @theGrounds in Roseville. Placer County is serving as the presenting sponsor for this year's fair, themed "Past, Present & Future." Community time capsule, all year: Residents are invited to help create a time capsule that will be buried in front of the Auburn Historic Courthouse. The county is seeking meaningful items that reflect life in Placer today and will tell future generations the story of the county's communities.
