Auburn woman joins centenarian club

An Auburn woman is the newest member of the centenarian club after celebrating her 100th birthday on Saturday. Marian Campbell was born in Chico on March 28, 1926, and moved to Auburn in 1949 to teach kindergarten. Campbell said she has lived in her South Auburn home since 1973. Campbell celebrated her milestone birthday at home among 66 family members, neighbors and friends. She even had the pleasure of celebrating with one of her former students, Dr. John Crawford, from her last kindergarten class in 1952. The celebration included a ton of food, cake and balloons, with "Happy Birthday" and "You Are My Sunshine" sang to the birthday girl by party attendees while her son, Gary Campbell, played the guitar. Campbell's daughter, Linda Story, said, "You Are My Sunshine" suited her mother because, "Everyone says her smile lights up the room." When asked her secret on hitting the centenarian club, Campbell said, "No smoking, hardly any drinking at all ..." Story confirmed her mom walks a mile every day, rain or shine. Story said her mom also enjoys spending time with her family, which includes her brother Gary and sister Sandy Murdock, and Campbell's three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
