Man arrested for attempted murder after barricading in Folsom apartment complex

A Folsom man was arrested for attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer; his arrest was the culmination of some tense moments at a city apartment complex over the weekend where police responded to reports that the suspect assaulted someone with a baseball bat. The scene quickly escalated when the man barricaded himself in an apartment. Police brought SWAT and other tactics to end the standoff safely. The initial report came in Sunday, March 29, around 1:18 p.m. Folsom PD fielded several 911 calls from people reporting an assault at the apartment complex at 1780 Creekside Drive. Folsom Police Commander Andrew Bates said when police arrived, they discovered the suspect barricaded himself in his apartment. "When officers arrived on scene, they located a victim who had serious injuries from being hit with a baseball bat and was transported to a local area hospital," said Bates. "The suspect had barricaded himself inside his apartment and armed himself with a sword and knife. FPD SWAT and crisis negotiators responded to the scene. After several hours, tear gas and less lethal munitions were deployed, and the suspect was taken into custody." The suspect, 24-year-old Klein Smith of Folsom, was arrested and booked at Sacramento County Mail Jail. He was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and resisting arrest.
