Rocklin alum turns setback into opportunity at Sierra

For much of his prep career at Rocklin High, Troy Ueltzen's path looked set. The hard-throwing right-hander emerged as one of the top local arms in the Sacramento area, and was originally committed to play at Arizona, appearing destined for the next step in major college baseball. Instead, his journey took an unexpected turn. Now at Sierra College, the 2025 Rocklin graduate is writing a different chapter built on recovery, resilience and a renewed appreciation for the game. Last week, Ueltzen made just his second start of the season in Sierra's crucial Big 8 Conference series against Folsom Lake, another milestone in what he described as a long and difficult climb back to full health. "It was a long recovery," Ueltzen said of his patch back to the mound after suffering an arm injury that ended his senior season. "I just got down to business and started working my butt off, and it's paying off." The road from Rocklin to Sierra wasn't the one Ueltzen originally envisioned. Like many players navigating today's changing recruiting landscape, the rise of the transfer portal reshaped his options before he ever reached campus. Originally committed to Arizona, Ueltzen instead found himself taking the JUCO route after there was not a spot for him on the roster in Tucson. It was a frustrating setback for Ueltzen, but now it serves as a move he sees as a blessing. "It made me have more grit," Ueltzen said of playing at Sierra. "It made me realize that I love the game a lot, and I love being here." Far from seeing junior college baseball as a step down, Ueltzen said the level of talent has only reinforced how competitive the path remains. "A lot of the people here are here for the same reason I am," he said. "A lot of guys are bounce-backs too, or were committed somewhere and ended up here. The JUCO level is really good, and it's a grind, but it's good." That grind has sharpened his focus. Though Ueltzen once considered contributing as a two-way player, he has since narrowed his attention solely to pitching, a decision he said has already accelerated his development. "I was going to be two-way here, and then decided I needed to take another step more in pitching, and I've seen a lot of improvement from that," he said. That progress has quickly reopened Division I doors. Ueltzen said programs such as Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton have already reached out, with more coaches expected to follow as he continues to build innings in conference play. For now though, his focus remains on helping Sierra make another postseason push. The Wolverines reached the Final Four a season ago, and Ueltzen believes this year's group has the pieces to make another run if it can carry last week's momentum through the second half of Big 8 play. "We're in a great spot right now," Ueltzen said. "If we keep playing like this, we've got a great chance."
