Sex offender sentenced to 100 years for abuse of children

Ezil Otis, 46, was sentenced on Feb. 26 to 100 years to life in prison following his jury conviction for sexually abusing two children under 14. The Placer County District Attorney's Office reported Otis committed lewd and lascivious acts against two child victims, including a developmentally delayed victim, between August 2020 and November 2021. Evidence presented during the trial showed Otis sexually assaulted the young male victim on multiple occasions and later sexually assaulted an 11-year-old neighbor girl who was entrusted to his care while she was alone in his home. "The case came to light after the young male victim, while in foster care, began exhibiting aggressive behavior toward other children - behavior that ultimately led to disclosures of the abuse he suffered," the DA's Office stated Tuesday afternoon. The DA's Office confirmed further investigation revealed Otis was a registered sex offender with a prior violent sexual assault conviction against an adult. According to prior Auburn Journal reports, Otis was previously convicted for a June 2004 sexual assault of a 34-year-old woman near the Nevada Street Station office building in Auburn. "Despite that history, he continued to place himself in positions of trust with children and used that access to commit new crimes," the DA's Office said. The DA's Office confirmed under current California law, even individuals sentenced for serious sexual offenses remain eligible for parole consideration later in life, meaning Otis may be considered for release under the state's elder parole provisions. According to the California Incarcerated Records and Information Search, Otis was admitted into state prison on March 24 and is serving his sentence at Wasco State Prison.
