Grizzlies advance to Boras semifinals

Granite Bay's varsity baseball team opened the Boras Invitational on Tuesday with two wins, advancing them to the semifinal round Wednesday night. The Grizzlies are scheduled to play Serra at 7 p.m., although weather might postpone the game. Granite Bay opened the tournament with a 6-3 win over Los Gatos. The Grizzlies led 2-0 before Los Gatos eventually tied the game at three in the top of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Granite Bay put two more runs on the board and never trailed again. Lukas Franco started off the inning by drawing a walk before Ryan Miller's basehit put runners at the corners. Connor Boese grounded out for an RBI before Cole Griffin's single scored Miller to put the Grizzlies in front 5-3. They tacked on one more run in the sixth inning when Andrew Jones singled, moved to second on an error, stole third and then scored on Isaac Schroeder's groundout. Drew Galbaugh threw the first five innings and allowed one earned run, two hits and struck out seven, while Griffin pitched the last two innings and struck out four to earn the save. It took the Grizzlies 10 innings to get by St. Ignatius Prep in the nightcap, 6-5. Both teams scored single runs in the first, third and ninth innings leading to a 3-3 tie. In the top of the tenth, the Grizzlies broke the trend and put a crooked number on the board with three runs. Boese led off the inning with a double and JC Peterson then walked. Nate McGowan was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dylan Tetz lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score one run. Granite Bay's second run came on an error by the catcher before Kenny DeVault singled and Schroeder grounded out to score McGowan and give the Grizzlies a 6-3 lead. Brendan Jones got the first two outs before allowing a two-run single, making the score 6-5, but ended the game with a pop out to Boese at shortstop.
