Local stat marvels: Auburn area hitters, pitchers posting huge numbers

As the spring season pushes deeper into league play, local baseball and softball standouts across the foothills are putting together stat lines too big to ignore. From hitters flirting with .500 averages to pitchers stacking strikeouts at elite rates, the Auburn area is loaded with early-season statistical marvels. Here are some of the best through the first half of the season: Baseball Hitters: Del Oro's Stewart leads the way The bats around the foothills have been loud through the first half of the season, led by several players putting together standout offensive starts. Del Oro features two of the most polished hitters in the foothills. Sophomore Jackson Stewart is putting together one of the best pure contact seasons around, batting .531 with 17 hits in 37 plate appearances, while striking out only twice all year. Teammate Nico Busalacchi has paired average with power, hitting .488 with 20 hits, seven doubles and three home runs. At Foresthill, David Silveria has been a breakout bat at .517 with 15 hits in 36 plate appearances, while sophomore Eli Selvester is batting .419 with 14 RBIs, 12 runs and two triples. Even more impressively, Selvester has struck out only three times in 11 games, another sign of his advanced feel at the plate. Placer junior Gavin Otis continues to anchor the Hillmen lineup, batting .457 with 21 hits, 11 RBIs, three doubles and three home runs. Bear River's Brayden Estrada has been one of the Bruins' most reliable bats, hitting .463 with 19 hits in 41 at-bats. Colfax two-way standout Jaimeson Rawlins has been just as dangerous at the plate as on the mound, batting .440, while striking out only once in 12 games, making him one of the toughest outs in the region. Teammate Brady Stowers has added another dimension with 19 stolen bases in 14 games, one of the top speed numbers in the area. Pitchers: Placer, Bear River have 1-2 punch On the mound, several local arms are putting up dominant strikeout totals and microscopic ERAs. Placer senior Garrett Brink has been nearly untouchable, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.11 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 25 innings. Brink has struck out 30 of the 101 batters he has faced, while opponents own just a .257 on-base percentage, meaning hitters statistically have a better chance of striking out than reaching base against him. Senior teammate Robby Silski has been just as impressive in a different way, allowing only one earned run in 20 innings for a sparkling 0.35 ERA, while striking out 19. Bear River boasts a pair of swing-and-miss arms in Cal Poly signee Kaden Nicholls, who has piled up 45 strikeouts in 30 innings, and Seamus McKeown, who has added 37 strikeouts in 30 ⅓ innings. Colfax ace Jaimeson Rawlins has set down 42 batters on strikes in 33 innings, while fellow Falcon Paolo O'Brien has been even more electric in shorter work with 37 strikeouts in just 21 ⅔ innings. At Del Oro, senior Anthony Clay has emerged as one of the Eagles' most reliable arms, striking out 23 in 17.2 innings. Foresthill's Waylon Gossic has supplied the Wildfires with a frontline arm as well, piling up 31 strikeouts in 18 innings. Softball Hitters: Del Oro, Placer sluggers rank among section leaders in home runs The foothills softball scene has produced no shortage of explosive offensive starts as well. At Placer, junior Paige Denniston has wasted no time making an impact after joining the Hillgals lineup late following basketball's section championship run. In just six games, Denniston is batting .550 with 11 hits in 20 at-bats, adding three doubles, a triple and two home runs. Her ability to jump in midseason and immediately provide power makes for one of the area's most intriguing stat lines. Teammate Carly Rice has supplied major thump as well, launching four home runs in 39 plate appearances over 10 games. At Del Oro, sophomore slugger Emma Johnson has emerged as one of the top power hitters in the Sac-Joaquin Section. Johnson's seven home runs rank third in the section, and she has paired that power with a complete line: .486 average, 18 hits, 16 RBIs, four doubles and two triples. Fellow Golden Eagle Caelyn Campos has been nearly as dangerous, batting .442 with seven doubles and a 1.250 OPS, while showing elite bat-to-ball skills. Bear River's Averie Lopez is putting together a strong season, batting .538 with seven RBIs, a home run and a triple. Sophomore Adalaide Mason has been equally impressive despite limited opportunities, batting .556. Lily Fiddyment has added a .417 average as well. At Foresthill, junior Rose Mellady is providing a major spark, batting .444 with eight hits in 18 at-bats, while adding six RBIs, two doubles and two triples in just five games. Pitchers: Del Oro's youth shines in circle In the circle, Del Oro's staff has been particularly impressive. Mikayla Finn has given the Golden Eagles a true ace, posting a 2.16 ERA across 58 ⅓ innings, an innings load that places her among the area's top workhorses. Freshman Katharine Popovski has also turned heads, striking out 27 batters in 22 ⅓ innings while allowing just four earned runs, an early sign of a high-upside future in Loomis.
