50 years ago: Lincoln tightens sound for Portland Jazz Festival

50 years ago Population 3,179 (U.S. Census 1960 and 1970) Band: Lincoln High's stage band returned from the 11th annual University of Portland Festival of Jazz with a seventh-place finish among its 12-school division this past weekend. The local band was the only California school represented in the prestigious festival that included 58 schools from a four-state area. In addition to those competing, another 17 bands were turned away because of limited times and facilities. Lincoln was in the middle division for schools with enrollments of between 800 and 1,199. North Kitsap High of Poulsbo, Washington, captured the division, as they scored a 236 out of a possible 300. Lincoln scored a 176. Other schools in the division included Lake Oswego, Rex Putnam, Central Kitsap, Mazama, West Linn, Lebanon, Corvallis, North Kitsap, JFK, Bainbridge and Klamath Falls. The schools are all located in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. According to Lincoln High band instructor Paul Crabtree, "The band did a better job than they did at the Reno Jazz Festival." Crabtee noted the band sounded a little tighter than in Reno. The music instructor also pointed out that Lincoln did well considering the first year at a music festival is always the hardest. It is hoped by the school officials that the meeting will give some answer to what they feel is a critical classroom shortage in the local school. The time is set for 8 p.m. and every resident is urged to attend. The meeting will be conducted in the school auditorium. The meeting will include a discussion by school administrators of the facts which indicate an immediate need for an increase in the size of the school. They also will conduct a tour of the school buildings. This will be the third such meeting held. It is expected that if the opinion of those attending the meeting is favorable, a special bond election will be called within the next two months. In order to increase attendance after the meeting, notices have been sent out to all parents by grade school students during the past week. Heat: Summer got an early start this year as temperatures soared up almost to the 90-degree mark part of the past week. Recordings kept by Harry Gordon showed the mercury rose to 89 degrees on Tuesday, and was only slightly lower on Monday when it read 87 and 84 on Wednesday. Unless rain falls soon, Lincoln is likely to have an early hot season. It is well over a month since any appreciable amount of moisture has fallen. It is also of interest that Donner Summit reports only 12 inches of snow, whereas this time last year the summit was burdened with 132 inches. If you dance, well, you'll have the chance – but engage your partners early. All this at the High School gymnasium. Take some change along and get in the fun. Round-Up: There will be a big round-up at the Bickford range on Sunday, April 18. Good picnic grounds. Good music. Bronco riding, steer roping, calf roping and tying. Program starts at 1:30 p.m. Be on hand and have a fine time. Note: Bickford Ranch, on Sierra College Blvd., is currently a new residential development project. Chamber: The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce met last evening in the council chamber at the auditorium and was fairly attended. The object of the meeting was to discuss ways and means of advertising to the world the advantages of investing and living in Lincoln and vicinity. The subject was discussed at length, with several schemes being advanced which will be decided upon at the next meeting. L.P. Singer, E.E. Burnett and B.C. Musser, members of a committee appointed some time ago by a representative gathering of business men and farmers to investigate the possibilities of an irrigation scheme that is now agitating our section, appeared before the Chamber and explained the linking of Lincoln irrigable lands with the Nevada Irrigation District, and asked for a donation from the Chamber to help pay the expenses of a preliminary survey of the project. The donation of $150 toward the fund was ordered, as this was deemed a step in the right direction, and as the object of the Chamber of Commerce is to promote anything that is good for the community, it felt this was a step toward progress. Lighting: J.P. Fairbanks of the Agricultural Extension Service, University of California, will conduct a demonstration in proper lighting of homes at the Lincoln Club House on April 15 at 8 o'clock p.m. The meeting will be held under the auspices of the Lincoln Farm Bureau Center. The Woman's Club and other organizations will be invited to attend the demonstration. Following this meeting, there will be a demonstration in some homes, the location to be announced later. Following the lighting demonstration in the home in the morning, there will be a demonstration in kitchen improvement at the home of Mrs. H.S. Williamson. The demonstration will be conducted by Miss Helen Meads.
