Placer's Rector bounces back from injury to lead Hillmen to title

Kannon Rector's season was defined by both his resilience and talent. After battling back from two knee surgeries in less than a year, the Placer High School junior helped lead the Hillmen to their first Sac-Joaquin Section championship in 33 years and second in school history. Rector, who is a three-year varsity starter and was named Foothill Valley League co-MVP, is the Gold Mountain California News Media Large-School Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season. The section title alone would have made the season memorable, but the path Rector took to get there elevated it into something even bigger. After playing through a torn meniscus for much of his sophomore season, Rector underwent surgery knowing the recovery would be difficult. The challenge intensified when he needed a second procedure just before the school year began, putting his junior campaign in doubt. "There was a high chance that I was going to not be able to play my entire junior year," Rector said. Instead, the second surgery became a turning point. Rather than another full repair, doctors were able to clean out the meniscus, allowing Rector to return just weeks before the Foundation Game. The comeback required patience at first, which was difficult for someone with a competitive edge like Rector. "At the beginning of the year, I had just gotten cleared a few weeks before," Rector said. "I had to kind of ease my way into it." That caution quickly gave way to the version of Rector Placer had been waiting for. His explosiveness returned, his confidence followed, and by postseason play, he had become one of the foothills' most complete players, capable of changing games as a scorer, defender and emotional spark. The timing could not have been better for a Placer team that entered the winter with championship expectations after multiple promising seasons ended earlier than anticipated. This was a veteran Hillmen group shaped by years of playoff heartbreak, and Rector said that shared experience sharpened the team's focus from the opening weeks of the season. "With such a senior-heavy team, we all knew this was probably the year to do it," Rector said of winning the section title. "Every practice, we all had a different type of focus, and that played such a big part in our success." That focus showed when it mattered most, as Placer survived a tense semifinal battle with Christian Brothers before breaking through for the blue banner, ending a title drought that stretched more than three decades. For Rector, an Auburn native from a Placer family, the championship carried a personal weight that went beyond basketball. "It meant the world," Rector said. "It's honestly just like a dream come true." The Hillmen's senior leadership played a major role in that breakthrough. Rector credited veteran teammates Joe Manley, Emmett Rose and Jeremiah Rethi for helping establish the accountability and daily standard that powered the title run. "Every day of practice those guys would hold everyone accountable," Rector said. "We were all on the same page at all times." That collective buy-in helped Placer navigate the pressure of being a championship-or-bust team, especially after coming close in previous seasons. When the Hillmen needed calm in the biggest moments, Rector was there. When they needed a bucket, defensive stop or momentum-changing play, Rector was there. And when the celebration finally came, it was Rector standing beneath the blue banner he spent the year chasing. Rector also broke the program's all-time assist record and surpassed 1,000 career points in a matter of days. Now, with consecutive league championships and a section crown under his belt, Rector's challenge for his senior year will shift to defending the title. With several key pieces graduating but a strong core returning, Rector said the standard for next season has already been established. "Now we know what it's going to take," Rector said. "It starts now with practice, the weight room, everything we do as a team."
