York 'let them play,' and Del Oro responded

Most high school coaching jobs begin in the offseason, but for Del Oro High School interim girls basketball coach Tristan York, it began in the middle of a storm. When the Lady Eagles' varsity coaching staff resigned in December with a 7-1 record, York was thrust into the job after starting the season as the JV coach. York provided a familiar face for Del Oro, which was in the midst of one of the most unusual midseason transitions. His first game in charge came Dec. 22 against Ponderosa and what followed was a season defined by stability, resilience and postseason success. For guiding Del Oro through the turbulence and one of its deepest playoff runs in recent years, York is the Gold Mountain California News Media Large-School Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. York's first priority was simply to restore normalcy within the program. "They're really good, really smart athletes," York said after his first game in charge. "I just gave them a tiny bit of structure and let them play." That message resonated immediately, as Del Oro rolled past Ponderosa 70-27 in York's debut, then carried that momentum through the rest of the winter. Del Oro went 18-6 under York's watch and finished 25-7 overall with an 11-3 record in the Sierra Foothill League, securing the No. 3 seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs. The Lady Eagles responded with playoff wins over Ponderosa and Colfax, the latter clinching the program's first section semifinal appearance since 2022 while also qualifying for the CIF NorCal Regional Tournament. When Del Oro found itself trailing three-time section-champion Colfax early in the fourth quarter of the quarterfinals, York's group answered with a 22-4 closing run. That stretch perfectly reflected the poise his team carried through months of uncertainty off the court. "This was a big thing for them," York said after the win. "They really wanted to get past the second round. After everything they've been through, it's good for their morale." That resilience nearly carried Del Oro to Golden 1 Center. The Lady Eagles pushed eventual section-champion Christian Brothers to overtime in a 57-51 semifinal loss, then regrouped in the state tournament as the No. 12 seed and went on the road to defeat Acalanes 74-62, extending the season into the state tournament's second round. What made York's season stand apart was not simply the wins but the way he helped preserve the team's focus in the face of intense public scrutiny and a highly unusual coaching situation. Players repeatedly credited the team's bond and ability to keep the outside noise from splintering the locker room, something York's calm and familiar presence clearly reinforced. Rather than overhaul what was already working, York leaned into trust, structure and letting a veteran team be itself. The result was one of Del Oro's most resilient seasons in recent memory.
