Daniel Kevin Schafer 4/09/1944 - 3/16/2026

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Daniel Kevin Schafer, age 81 of Auburn, California, on March 16, 2026. Born in Bronxville, New York, April 9, 1944, to the late Harry Schafer and Marion Agnano, he is survived by his wife Michelle Hermann, his former wife Diane Schafer, his three daughters, Patti, Kristen and Megan and his two sisters, Anne and Mary. He is preceded in death by his son Daniel Kevin Schafer, Jr. A loving and engaged father and grandfather, he had 7 grandchildren. A graduate of Curry College in 1966, he met and married Diane Louise Marinelli in 1967. Serving his country, Dan was an Army Lieutenant from 1966-1969 in the Vietnam War. Returning home, he began his career as a paper salesman and rose to executive leadership roles at Scott Paper Company, Sunbeam Outdoor Furniture and US Industries. Upon early retirement, Dan set out in search of sunshine and beauty, a place his four children and their families could gather and he settled in Auburn, California. For the next 27 years he skied, hiked and rode horses with family and friends. He threw himself into ranch work by day, a good book by night. He earned a buckle in the grueling 1 day 100-mile horseback endurance race - The Tevis Cup. Dan was deeply compassionate and volunteered his time to Seniors, hospice and horse rescue. After 46 years together, Dan and Diane decided to end their marriage, but always maintained their strong bond of love and friendship until his death. In 2022, Dan married Michelle Hermann and together they resided at their Auburn ranch, The Last Stop. It was there amongst his horses, goats and beloved dogs that Dan passed his final days. Surrounded by family, Dan's passing was brief and peaceful and fitting to how he lived. Daniel was the embodiment of resilience, vitality, wit and humor. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten by those who knew him.
