Folsom Lake Crossing Phase 2 safety improvements on deck

City officials took action this week to begin Phase 2 of the Folsom Lake Crossing Safety Improvement project. The Federal Highway Administration recently awarded Folsom $1,040,000 in Congressional funds for "roadway safety improvements that may include a median barrier, pavement resurfacing, updated roadway delineation and segment lighting." Similar Phase 1 improvements came in 2023. The Folsom City Council approved a necessary Caltrans agreement April 14 to get reimbursed for the design costs. Last year, the city hired Kimley Horn for $132,000 to complete design, environmental and right-of-way tasks. The project has progressed through the environmental review, right-of-way and design phases with Caltrans and the Sacramento Area Council of Governments. Final design has been completed, all necessary approvals are in hand, and construction is scheduled for this spring, staff said. Phase 2 includes crack seal and slurry seal of the pavement surface and removal and replacement of pavement markings between Folsom Dam Road and Folsom Auburn Road. The plan includes 3,890 feet of barrier rail between the Folsom Dam Road intersection to the eastern edge of the Folsom Lake Crossing bridge deck. Staff said during design, the project scope was expanded to include additional pavement rehab beyond the original grant request to better maintain the pavement condition on Folsom Lake Crossing. The addition covers pavement preservation treatments and striping from Folsom Dam Road to Folsom Auburn Road and will be completed with local funds, according to the report.
