City historian to speak at Friends of the Library Speaker Series

Auburn City Historian Carol Cramer will present a program about Auburn's early history: Why did Auburn thrive while other Gold Rush towns did not? How did Auburn become the Placer County seat 175 years ago? The answers may surprise you! The presentation will be held Friday, July 17, and will include many other interesting facts about the early days of Auburn. Friends of the Library speaker series programs begin at noon on the third Friday of each month in the Rose Room at City Hall. Cramer grew up in a Lassen County ranch house built in 1874. Her family has deep roots in California dating to the 1850s so she grew up living history. She graduated from UC Davis with a history major and teaching credential. She taught fourth grade and enjoyed taking her classes on field trips. Upon retirement, Cramer became a Placer County Museum docent and assisted in the development of various programs, such as the successful living history programs and the Old Auburn Cemetery Tour. Additionally, she wrote a book called "The Story of the Bernhard Family: A Glimpse into Auburn/Placer County's History." Recently, as a board member with the Placer County Historical Society, she assisted in reopening the Benton Welty Historical Classroom at City Hall and the Old Town Post Office History/Welcome Center. Cramer's goal as the city historian is to increase awareness of Auburn's very special history. Tevis Cup vet to speak at Canyon Keepers meeting The Canyon Keepers monthly meeting is Tuesday, July 7, at 6:15 p.m. at Canyon View Community Center, 471 Maidu Drive, in Auburn. Hal Hall will present the incredible history of the Western States Trail - the 100-mile route connecting Olympic Valley to Auburn. Hall will share his stories during this educational and entertaining talk. Hall is an Auburn native and 33-time finisher of the Tevis Cup. He has been hiking, running and riding the trails of the Auburn State Recreation Area for nearly 60 years and has a deep understanding and appreciation for the trails and their history. In Hall's spare time, he participates in history expeditions where he's traveled several pioneered routes over the Sierra on foot and horseback. Snacks and social time will be from 5:45-6:15 p.m. Friends of the Library used book sale The Auburn Friends of the Library invites the public to its July used book sale on Tuesday, July 7, and Saturday, July 11, at the Auburn Library, 350 B Nevada Street. This month's sale is perfect for readers wishing to stock up on summer reading. Shoppers will find a huge selection of romance novels priced at 50 cents each. In addition to books, the sale will feature a large assortment of puzzles in a variety of sizes and difficulty levels, offering fun and affordable entertainment for puzzle enthusiasts. Bargain hunters may make purchases from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day and leave donations from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Also, FOL has a designated Tuesday, July 14, and Saturday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. as donation-only days. Pilots & Paws visit Gold Country Rotary Jerry & Nancy Wagner and Robert Hewett will be the featured speakers at the next meeting of Auburn Gold Country Rotary on Thursday, July 9, at Awful Annie's, located at 13460 Lincoln Way.
