Tuesday night surprise: Quake rattles Granite Bay

Did you feel it? An earthquake rattled the Granite Bay area Tuesday night, April 28. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed a magnitude 2.8 earthquake struck the Granite Bay region around 6:35 p.m. The tremblor hit about two miles west-southwest of the Granite Bay area with a depth of about 4.3 kilometers. While a magnitude 2.6 earthquake isn't anything spectacular in the world of tremblors, plenty of residents in the region said they definitely felt the shaker. People took to social media chat pages to share the unique experience of feeling an earthquake near Granite Bay; people from Orangevale to Rocklin reported feeling the shaker. "Shook my whole house in Rocklin!" said one person. "A huge rumble just shook my house in South Auburn," said another. Placer County is considered a low seismic risk region compared to the Bay Area or Los Angeles; however, there are regional fault lines which can affect the area, such as the Foothills Fault System along the western Sierra Nevada metamorphic belt. The well-known San Andreas Fault is located about 80 miles to the west of Granite Bay.
