Investigation underway after Flock cameras stolen, discarded in Auburn

An investigation is underway after license plate reader cameras belonging to the Auburn Police Department were stolen over the weekend. Flock Safety cameras located near Nevada Street and Nevada Way, and in the area of Highway 49 and Marguerite Mine Road were stolen early Sunday morning. Auburn Police Sgt. Joe Almeida confirmed the cameras went offline between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., when it is believed the theft occurred. According to Almeida, the cameras were later recovered, one in the Nevada Street canal and the other in the Marguerite Mine Road canal. "The recovered cameras were found submerged in water and are considered destroyed. They are no longer operational," Almeida said in an email to the Auburn Journal. Additionally, Almeida reported a third camera belonging to the Placer County Sheriff's Office was also stolen and has not been recovered. Elise Soviar, a communications manager for the Sheriff's Office, confirmed that camera was located at Highway 49 and Nevada Street, and was taken during the same timeframe. "Investigators have obtained video footage related to the incident and are actively working to identify the individual or individuals involved," Almeida said. Almeida confirmed no arrests had been made but involved individuals could face charges, including theft and felony vandalism. Almeida also confirmed while theft and vandalism of license plate reader cameras have been reported in other jurisdictions, it is not common in Auburn. Auburn PD is working with Flock Safety to replace the damaged cameras, valued at $800 each. Almeida confirmed due to the cut wiring and potential damage to the mounting poles, costs could reach up to $2,000 per location. A timeline for the replacements' installation has not been finalized.
