It's official: Roseville one of the fastest growing cities in the state

The City of Roseville continues to establish itself as one of the most dynamic growing cities in the state. A new report released by the California Department of Finance shows Roseville ranks No. 1 in population growth among cities with populations under 300,000. Roseville also ranks as the sixth-fastest growing city in the state for cities with populations of 30,000 or more. Roseville's population as of January 2026 is listed as 165,455, a 2.7-percent change from last year. Placer County also continues to prove it's a prime destination spot for new residents. It ranks No. 1 in the state for fastest-growing population with a 1.4-percent increase between 2025-2026 and a population of 434,823. Placer County also ranks No. 4 in the state for fastest housing unit growth with a 1.9-percent increase. In contrast, the report shows the state has seen a decrease in population by about 54,000 in the past year. Representatives from Governor Gavin Newsom's office attributed the state's decline in population growth to "restrictive federal policy changes." "From 2021 to 2024, California's growth in net international migration was driven by both legal immigrants and the expansion of international humanitarian migration programs," said the report. "2025's ending of nearly all humanitarian migration programs, combined with a significant slowing legal immigration processing resulted in net legal international immigration declining in 2025 by more than 50 percent from 248,400 persons during 2024 — the highest level since 2018 — to 126,400 during 2025." The .14-percent decline in California's population marks the first year of population loss after three consecutive years of population increases following the COVID-19 pandemic, said officials from Governor Newsom's Office.
