Placer High School honored as 2026 California Distinguished School

Placer High School Principal Jaime Jackson and Placer Union High School District Board President Jessica Spaid traveled to Anaheim on April 24 to attend a reception celebrating the recipients of the 2026 California Distinguished Schools Award. Placer High was one of 408 middle and high schools to win an award. Placer's recognition is in the category of Achievement Gap Closers: Schools that are accelerating academic progress for two or more groups that have been historically underserved while also demonstrating achievement for all students that is above the state median and maintaining or increasing academic performance for all students. Since its inception in 1985, the California Distinguished Schools Award has remained one of the state's most important ways to celebrate exceptional schools, districts, teachers and classified employees for their innovation, talent and success in supporting students. "It is my pleasure to honor and recognize these 408 schools for their efforts to move the needle for student achievement, no matter what," Superintendent Tony Thurmond said. "An excellent public education has the power to transform lives, and I commend the educators and school communities who have dedicated themselves to producing exemplary results. This year's California Distinguished Schools represent the hard work of our middle and high school educators and school staff, who provide our secondary students with life-changing educational opportunities." In keeping with statewide standards for accountability, schools must have at least 95-percent participation in statewide assessments to qualify for Distinguished School recognition. Schools may not earn recognition if they have concerning school climate indicators, such as very high suspension or chronic absenteeism. Under Principal Jackson's guidance, Placer has emphasized the significance of being present on campus each day, addressing not just academic needs but also fostering a supportive and inclusive environment that nurtures the emotional and social wellbeing of every student. This "Placer Presence" approach has been instrumental in bridging the achievement gap and ensuring all students have access to quality education and the resources needed to succeed. The collaborative efforts between teachers, staff and families have created a strong community network that supports student success. This partnership is key in identifying and addressing unique challenges faced by students and leads to improved outcomes. "The honor of a Distinguished School is a reflection of the efforts of our entire school community, and I couldn't be prouder," stated Principal Jackson.
