Folsom approves Benevento Park plan in Empire Ranch

City officials approved the long-awaited 19-acre Benevento Family Park plan for Empire Ranch last week. The Folsom City Council unanimously approved the $7.9 million Benevento Family Park Master Development Plan on April 28, marking a major step for the future neighborhood park next to Vista del Lago High School. The park proposal has gone through an exhausting gauntlet of public debate and revisions extending back two decades. A recent online survey collected 545 responses. "We've had a high level of interest and passion from the community throughout this process," said Senior Park Planner Brad Nelson. "This park has to be one and done," said Councilmember Sarah Aquino, who lives near the park site. "We've already let one generation of kids and families miss out on this park. We can't delay any longer." The plan uses a flexible approach called "additive alternates," allowing the city to stay under budget while still delivering the most important park features. Benevento Park is designed to offer a wide range of recreation for all ages, taking advantage of the natural terrain and scenic views, staff said. Planned highlights include: · Separate shaded playgrounds for ages 2-5 and 5-12. · Four lighted pickleball courts, a basketball court and a multi-use field. · Shaded picnic areas with scenic views. · Walking paths and a natural trail around the pond. · On-site parking and restrooms. · If funding allows, a fishing dock with pond access, a concrete path around the pond, plus sand volleyball courts. "We can't let perfect be the enemy of good," said Aquino. "Nobody is getting exactly what they want. But this is a very, very nice park plan." Construction is expected to begin in February 2027 with the park opening in spring 2028, authorities said. The park is at the intersection of Broadstone Parkway and Carpenter Hill Road.
