Eagles win fifth straight section golf title

Vista del Lago's golf team won its fifth straight section championship on Tuesday, shooting a winning score of 370 at Pheasant Run in Chowchilla to win the Division II championship. Leading the way was medalist Kenny Yang, who shot the low score of the tournament with 68. Armaan Khan, who finished third, shot a 71 followed by Niko Sato (76), Julian Chang (76), Ryan O'Malley (79) and Brody McWhirk (84). Rio Americano took second in the tournament in 377, seven strokes behind the Eagles. "The team keeps playing great golf," Vista coach Miguel Rodriguez said. "They seem to always pick each other up. Every match or tournament there is someone different that steps up and leads the team. That's one thing I love about this team; they compete with each other every single time they play whether it's practice or a match. It brings out the best of them, and the results are proof of that." A week earlier, the Eagles won its fourth straight league championship overall and second straight in the Capital Valley Conference. The team finished the league season with an 11-1 record and also won both league tournaments. On Wednesday, the Eagles defeated Christian Brothers, 185-205. Kenny Yang led the way with a 35 followed by Ryan O'Malley and Brody McWhirk, who shot 37s, while Julian Chang and Armaan Khan shot 38s. Max Stanger came in in 40 strokes. Vista's team consists of five seniors: Yang, O'Malley, Chang, McWhirk and Stanger; three juniors, Niko Sato, Marc Paracuelles and Nathan Levine and one sophomore, Khan. "It was very cool to see all the seniors play well in their final home match," Rodriguez said. "The team is playing solid golf going into the playoffs so I'm expecting our season to continue."
