No free rides: Colfax ace Rawlins yet to give up walk in 63 innings

Some baseball stats leave room for interpretation. Hits can be ruled errors, earned runs can be debated, and even stolen bases can come with an asterisk. But one number doesn't lie: walks. Through 63 innings this season, Colfax junior Jaimeson Rawlins hasn't issued a single one. Rawlins has shown remarkable command. In an era of pitch counts and deep lineups, he's been tough to hit, striking out 66 batters with zero walks across 261 hitters faced while posting a 2.22 ERA. His only free passes this season have been two hit batters across 12 appearances. "It's an absolute blast to call pitches for him," Colfax coach James McCabe said. "When a guy is in the zone with everything in his arsenal, you can throw anything in any count. It keeps hitters off balance, even when they know he's going to be around the strike zone." McCabe said he gives Rawlins complete freedom on the mound, trusting the right-hander to read situations and attack hitters the right way. "It's been really fun to watch him work and just be along for the ride," McCabe added. "Between that and the job our catcher does calling the game, it puts us in a great position every time he's on the mound." Rawlins is aware he hasn't issued a walk this season, but it doesn't occupy his mind when he takes the mound. In fact, he says it doesn't even enter his mind. "I don't think about it at all," Rawlins said. "What works for me is just focusing on the batter in the box. I throw strikes in the bullpen, so when I get on the mound it's no different. I just hit my spots and throw strikes." That mindset stems from Colfax football coach Jason Stowers, who Rawlins said has instilled a strong work ethic and emphasized the importance of being prepared for the big moments. "My mindset comes from how I practice," he said. "One of my football coaches always talks about mentality and how you practice is how you play. So I try to go as hard as I can in practice, and that carries over into games. When I'm out there, I just want to compete and be my best." Rawlins doesn't buy into the more cautious, analytics-driven approach of nibbling around hitters or trying to induce chase. Instead, he attacks each at-bat head-on. He's efficient in his approach, attacking the zone while painting the corners and keeping hitters guessing. "I'm trying to get guys out in as few pitches as possible," Rawlins said. "It helps keep my arm fresh and lets me go deeper into games." That approach has allowed the Falcons to preserve their bullpen arms when he starts. He's been a model of consistency, going at least four innings in every outing while regularly working deep into games. He's gone six innings in seven of his 12 appearances, reached five innings in nine of them and pitched two complete games. Rawlins showcased his versatility in Wednesday's 8-3 playoff win over Ben Holt College Prep by closing in the seventh inning. He retired the side in order, striking out one and preserving his no-walk streak by inducing a groundout on a 3-1 count for the final out. It wasn't the most conventional approach, but McCabe said it was part of the plan to ensure Rawlins' arm was ready for his scheduled start in Friday's quarterfinal matchup against No. 13 Argonaut. "We just wanted to get him a few pitches against live hitters and build his confidence in that situation," McCabe said. "He's a horse, and we're going to rely on him heavily on Friday. He gets guys to put the ball in play and keeps his pitch count low. We've got plenty of arms, so this was about getting him comfortable in a playoff atmosphere and ready to go." The Rawlins name already carries weight in Colfax athletics with several family ties woven into the school's history. His father, Justin, was a 1,000-yard rusher and pitcher who helped lead the Falcons to back-to-back Golden Empire League championships. Another relative, Pat Rawlins, still holds the school's single-game rushing record with 279 yards. A third-generation Falcon, Rawlins knows he has big shoes to fill every time he puts on a Colfax jersey. "There is some pressure with my family name," Rawlins said. "It's a big legacy in Colfax, and I'm just trying my best to live up to it. It means everything to represent my family and this school. They've put in so much work, and I'm just trying to continue that legacy." Rawlins' future is still taking shape. He has caught the attention of local colleges but hopes he can continue to generate interest with his senior year still ahead. "It's still pretty undecided," Rawlins said. "I've signed up on some recruiting sites and I've talked to a coach at American River, but that's about it right now. I definitely want to keep playing." For now, his focus is on leading Colfax on another deep playoff run as the Falcons look to secure a spot in the semifinals for the third time in four years. "This group is really tight," he said. "We spend a lot of time together practicing, studying and watching film. When you're putting in that kind of work together, you build a bond. It's blood, sweat and tears with these guys."
